the movie poster reads, "Through the doors of the most famous canteen in the world pass the armed forces
of all the United Nations where they are entertained nightly by the most famous personalities of stage, screen and radio.
Here they find laughter, comradeship and gaiety . . . and dance to music by their favorite big-name bands.
Here, too, they find romance . . . while a constant panorama of wonderful entertainment unfolds before their happy eyes.
STAGE DOOR CANTEEN brings you 48 great stars . . .6 big-name bands. . . and a poignant and indescribably tender story of a soldier's love in wartime . . . where hours must take the place of years." (The real Stage Door Canteen on 44th Street could not be used for the filming as it was too busy receiving real servicemen. It was recreated in New York and at the RKO Studios in Culver City.)

In 1955, The Great Pretender, with lyrics written in the washroom of the Flamingo Hotel in Las Vegas, exceeded the success of the Platter's debut in 1953. It became their first national #1 hit. The Great Pretender was also the act's biggest R&B hit, with an eleven-week run atop the charts.

On June 28, 1939 Joe Louis defended his world heavyweight title aginst Tony Galento. Two-Ton Tony was a 9-1 betting underdog--for good reason. His physique was more suited to a pie-eating champion than a heavyweight boxing contender. He had a pretty decent left hook and not much else. Nevertheless, Tony put up a decent showing against Louis. Galento even managed to score a flash knockdown in the third round before he himself was knocked out in round four.

Another famous fight where you better not leave the room to get yourself a beer: From May 1981, rising heavyweight contender Gerry Cooney destroys a past-his-prime Ken Norton in just 54 seconds. This is one of the most brutal knockouts you'll ever see.
