NIGHT GALLERY THE ESCAPE ROUTE Ending The third and final story from the 1969 pilot of Night Gallery, entitled The Escape Route, starred Richard Kiley, and centered around an escaped Nazi war criminal living in South America and haunted by his past. He begins to visit a museum where he is drawn to a painting of a fisherman on a lake. It's such a peaceful setting, that he becomes obsessed with it and soon begins to see himself as the figure in the boat. He is soon recognized by a survivor of the camps, played by Sam Jaffe. When Israeli agents are about to catch up to him, he flees into the museum, and to the painting, there he begs God to take him into the painting. What he doesn't realize is, the painting has been moved and in it's place is one portraying the brutality of the holocaust. I think with all three stories, Rod was showing us that after all is said and done, there is justice.

I Remember Elie Weisel Dedicated to another famous Holocaust survivor, Nazi hunter and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Elie Wiesel was born at Sighet, Maramures county, Romania On September 30, 1928. He is the author of over 40 books, the best known of which is Night, a memoir that describes his experiences during the Holocaust and his imprisonment in several concentration camps. Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. The Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," noting that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps," as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace," Wiesel has delivered a powerful message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity. On November 30, 2006 Wiesel received an honorary knighthood in London, England in recognition of his work toward raising Holocaust education in the United Kingdom. Music "Hatikvah", (Israeli National Anthem) performed by Barbra Streisand. I'm thankful to be able to share this with you.

Memories of Danny Kaye Danny was born David Daniel Kaminsky in Brooklyn in 1913, the son of an immigrant Russian tailor. After dropping out of high school he worked for a radio station and later as a comedian in the Catskills. After his solo success in the Catskills, he joined the dancing act of Harvey and Young in 1933. On opening night he lost his balance and the audience broke into a roar of laughter. He would later incorporate this into his act. Enjoying growing popularity in 1939, Danny won over the Broadway crowd that same year with his show-stopping comic singing in "Lady in the Dark," in which he rattled off the names of more than fifty polysyllabic Russian composers in 39 seconds in a song called "Tchaikovsky." Throughout the early 1940's he performed night club acts, on Broadway, and to support the troops overseas during WWII. Though he appeared in his first film in 1937, it wasnít until almost 10 years later that his film career hit its stride. Throughout his career he starred in seventeen movies, including THE KID FROM BROADWAY (1946), THE SECRET LIFE OF WALTER MITTY (1947), THE INSPECTOR GENERAL (1949), HANS CHRISTIAN ANDERSEN (1952), and the incomparable THE COURT JESTER (1956). In one of his final performances, he proved the versatility of his talent and earned rave reviews for his impassioned portrayal of a Holocaust survivor in the 1981 television movie SKOKIE. In 1987 Danny died of a heart attack in Los Angeles. An amazing actor, singer, dancer, comic, and all-around entertainer, he was a Renaissance man off the stage as well as on, where he was a celebrated chef, a baseball team owner, and an airplane pilot, flying everything from Piper Cubs to Boeing 747ís. His deep and continued commitment to the betterment of the people of the world was an inspiration, and his intelligent humor created a style all his own that made him one of the most beloved entertainers of his time. In a clip from the 1952 film "Hans Christian Andersen", Danny shows off his incredible style with "Inchworm.

Sinking of RMS Lusitania 1915 The RMS Lusitania was a British passenger liner that was torpedoed in the First World War by the German submarine U-20 off the coast of Ireland on May 7, 1915. It sank in just 18 minutes. A total of 1,198 of 1,959 passengers perished, including 128 of the 197 Americans on board. Despite the large number of American casualties, U.S. president Woodrow Wilson only issued a formal complaint to the German government. He was heavily criticized in the British press for not declaring war. For years the British government insisted the Lusitania contained no war material, but a dive in 2006 found stores of ammunition. (Thus it was a legitimate war target for German submarines.) There is only one remaining Lusitania survivor, a 93-year-old Englishwoman, who was just three months old when the ship was sunk. The last American survivor died on April 12, 2008.

Empress of Ireland Tragedy 1914 An almost forgotten maritime tragedy is the sinking of The Empress of Ireland, a trans-Atlantic ocean liner owned by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company. At about 2 a.m. on May 29, 1914, during one of its regular voyages from Quebec City to Liverpool, it collided with the Norwegian ship Storstad in the cold waters of the St. Lawrence River. Out of the 1,477 passengers aboard, 1,012 perished. The high death toll was largely attributable to how quickly the ship sank (14 minutes) and that most of the passengers were in bed when the accident occurred. Among the dead were 167 Salvation Army musicians who were travelling to England to perform at a charity function. A Canadian inquiry into the disaster blamed the Storstad for the collision while a Norwegian inquiry blamed the Empress of Ireland. For years the Empress of Ireland was visited by scuba divers who plundered some of its valuables. However, it is now illegal to dive near the wreck as the Canadian government has declared it a maritime gravesite. (There are human remains inside the ship.) There are no living survivors from that awful night. The last one died in 1985.
