Old Fart's clip on the Dodgers got me to missing and reminiscing about my hometown of Brooklyn NY, so here's something I wanted to share with anyone else who still remembers. If you grew up there, it will always be in your heart, no matter how far away life may take you.

Often cited as one of the great comedies of its time, the film version won critical acclaim and became the biggest US box office hit in the summer of 1955. It contains one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century in which Marilyn Monroe's dress is blown up above her waist by a passing train underneath a subway grate she is standing on. A famous quote, "Isn't it delicious?" has originated from this scene and was even posed as a question on the game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? and a bit more TRIVIA ~ both Jimmy Stewart and Walter Matthau were considered for the part of the middle-aged husband, tempted by his sexy, blonde neighbor . . . . . .
Actor who got the part: Tom Ewell

On April 21, 1980 unheralded Rosie Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line in the prestigious Boston Marathon. Her apparent victory in record time was immediately suspicious. First, everyone assumed Jacqueline Gareau was the leading female. Nobody saw Gareau lose the lead in the race at anytime after the eighth mile. Furthermore, Ruiz's running shoes were barely scuffed and she was hardly perspiring in the unseasonably warm weather. Two Harvard University students signed affidavits stating they saw Ruiz illegally enter the course just a few hundred yards from the finish line. Ruiz denied the accusations and maintained she had run unnoticed among a pack of male runners. Few people believed her story and she was subsequently disqualified after an investigation. To this day Ruiz has stubbornly refused to return her winner's medal, so Gareau was given a larger medal. Twenty five years later Gareau was ceremoniously allowed to break the tape--a thrill that Ruiz deprived her from experiencing in 1980. Ruiz had qualified to run in Boston by finishing the 1979 New York City Marathon with a decent time, but investigators discovered she had cheated there too. (She left the course after a few hundred yards, took a subway train to an area near the finish line, illegally re-entered the race and finished 26th.) Ruiz promised to prove her innocence by winning the 1980 New York City Marathon. She never showed up.

One of the most successful world's fairs ever held was Expo '67 in Montreal. It happened to coincide with Canada's centennial year. The fair was held on two artificial islands built in the St. Lawrence River. The islands were created using the dirt excavated from Montreal's subway construction. Expo was the place to be that summer!

Bernard (Bernhard) Goetz was riding a New York City subway train on December 22, 1984. Four black youths, aged 18 and 19, menacingly surrounded him and demanded money. Goetz, who had previously been mugged twice, opened fire with a small-calibre handgun. One shot severed the spinal cord of one of the assailants, permanently paralyzing him. The other three were less seriously wounded. Goetz fled the subway car but eventually turned himself into police nine days later. Dubbed the Subway Vigilante by New York's newspapers, Goetz was hailed as a hero by crime-weary New Yorkers after it was discovered the four youths all had long criminal records and admitted to being on their way to steal money from machines at a video arcade. (At the time, an average of 38 crimes were committed in the New York subway system each day!) Goetz was only convicted of a third-degree gun possession felony and served eight months in jail. The three able-bodied felons all committed serious crimes afterwards. One was sentenced to 25 years for raping and sodomizing a pregnant woman.
