Did This Scare You Out of the Water For anyone who hasn't seen this film, Jaws is a 1975 thriller directed by Steven Spielberg, based on Peter Benchley's best-selling novel inspired by the Jersey Shore shark attacks of 1916. Jaws bears similarities to several literary and artistic works, most notably Moby-Dick by Herman Melville. The character of Quint strongly resembles Captain Ahab, the obsessed captain of the Pequod who devotes his life to hunting a sperm whale. Quint's monologue reveals his similar vendetta against sharks, and even his boat, the Orca, is named after the only natural enemy of sharks. A direct reference to these similarities may be found in the original screenplay, which introduced Quint by showing him watching the film version of Moby-Dick. His laughter throughout made people get up and leave the theater (Wesley Strick's screenplay for Cape Fear featured a similar scene). However, the scene from Moby-Dick could not be licensed from Gregory Peck, the owner of the rights. The final scenes of the film, in which the men chase the shark and try to harpoon it with flotation barrels, parallel the chase for Moby-Dick in the novel. We have this in our library and watch it usually once a month. There's something about this film that sticks in my memory, and no, I never went back into the water.

Try to Remember One of the most beautiful songs from the 1960's, from Broadway's 'The Fantasticks', which opened on May 3, 1960, and closed Jan 13, 2002, after 17,162 performances. This song, performed by the Brothers Four, was part of a PBS special on folk music. It reminds me of an era when The Brothers Four, The Lettermen and other groups would perform at coffee houses, winter canivals and university campuses.....Try To Remember!

Sticks Nix Hick Pix The famous headline that appeared on the front page of Variety on July 17, 1935. (The translation from showbiz lingo to English is that rural audiences were rejecting movies about country bumpkins.)

Rangers-Canadiens NHL Game 1936 Great vintage sports footage! British Pathe newsreels tended to go far afield to bring viewers interesting activities from around the world. They were present at Madison Square Garden on January 28, 1936 to film an NHL game between the Montreal Canadiens (not Canadians!) versus the New York Rangers. A few things to notice; the absence of the center red line; the players standing sideways to one another on faceoffs; and the way goalies used to hold their sticks before they wore trappers on their catching hands.

Captain High Liner Commercial This Canadian commercial for High Liner battered fish sticks made people chortle in 1979. Now it's kind of creepy...'Ever been to sea, Billy?'

New York Islanders Logo 1995-97 For reasons best known to the New York Islanders, in 1995 the NHL team decided to replace their classic logo with this one of a grizzled mariner. The team should have gotten the message when several members of the media laughed at it during its unveiling. When the Islanders played their first game with the new logo in Madison Square Garden versus the New York Rangers, the home team's supporters quickly saw the resemblance to the logo of High Liner frozen foods. The often-amusing Ranger fans began shouting, 'We want fish sticks!' for most of the game. The Islanders reverted back to their old logo in 1997.
