Secretariat Wins the Belmont This is of of the most outstanding things in sports you'll ever see: Secretariat decisively captures horse racing's Triple Crown in 1973 by winning the Belmont Stakes by a remarkable 31 lengths! Secretariat's winning time was 2:24--still the Belmont track record. CBS announcer Chic Anderson makes the classic call.

1940s Radio Broadcast - Bob Hope and Judy Garland This was broadcast on the, 'Command Performance,' show, Armed Forces Radio Network February 20, 1945 featuring Bob Hope and Judy Garland. There is a skit a the beginning and Judy sings a short parody, 'Over The Barrel', of, 'Over The Rainbow' and then she and Hope finish with with a portion of, I'm Gonna Go For You'. Perhaps I should say try to finish. Also, being a live program, mistakes are made but the performers continue with an entertaining show. 1919 Black Sox Scandal The worst sports scandal in American history revolved around the 1919 Chicago White Sox. The White Sox won their second American League pennant in three years and were heavily favored to beat the National League champion Cincinnati Reds in the best-of-nine World Series. But, lo and behold, the Reds won in eight games. Reporters and baseball insiders who watched the games knew something was amiss. White Sox pitchers Eddie Cicotte and Lefty Williams, the team's two aces, combined for all five Chicago losses. Their pitches seemed to lack zip. The White Sox also made uncharacteristic errors in the field and amateurish mental mistakes. It took nearly a year for evidence to surface that the eight of the White Sox had thrown the Series for gamblers. The press dubbed them the 'Black Sox,' and the eight were banned from pro baseball. Among them was the great Shoeless Joe Jackson, whose .356 career batting average is the third best ever. In order to restore the public's faith in Major League Baseball, Judge Kenesaw M. Landis was hired by the 16 team owners to serve as the sport's commissioner. He was given a lifetime contract and extraordinary powers. The White Sox did not play in another World Series until 1959.

Celebrity Sweepstakes - Game Show Celebrity Sweepstakes was an NBC game show that aired from April 1, 1974 to October 1, 1976. It was hosted by Jim MacKrell. Here's how it worked: A panel of six celebrities was asked a trivia question. Before knowing the exact question but only the category, the members of the studio audience, through an electronic voting system, determined the odds of each panelist answering the question correctly by selecting whom they thought was most likely to give the correct answer. Based on those odds, the contestants wagered money on a celebrity and then found out if the bet was a good one. Celebrity Sweepstakes was originally slotted against Search for Tomorrow where it did not fare well against the popular CBS soap opera. It was then moved to 10 a.m. where it routinely bettered The Joker's Wild in the ratings. However, when CBS expanded The Price is Right to an hour, Celebrity Sweepstakes was blown away. For years it was believed all Celebrity Sweepstakes episodes had been erased by NBC, but obviously this one survived. This is the final eight minutes of the final show from October 1, 1976.

Affirmed Wins Triple Crown - 1978 When Affirmed won the thoroughbred racing's Triple Crown in 1978, the feat did not receive near as much publicity in the mainstream sports media as it should have, perhaps with good reason. There had been three Triple Crown champions in six years, including one just the year before (Seattle Slew). However, it would be 37 years before another horse (American Pharaoh) repeated the achievement. Here is Affirmed's narrow victory in the 1978 Belmont Stakes. Renowned CBS announcer Chic Anderson calls the race--the last major one of his career as he died of a heart attack the following March at age 47. Runner-up Alydar finished second in all three Triple Crown races in 1978.
