Joni Mitchells Big Yellow Taxi In concert 1970 with the environmentalist "Big Yellow Taxi". Joni Mitchell, was born Roberta Joan Anderson on November 7, 1943, in Fort Macleod, Alberta. She is a Canadian musician, songwriter, and painter. Her singing began in small nightclubs and busking on the streets of Toronto and in her native Western Canada. She subsequently became associated with the fast growing folk music scene of the mid-1960s in New York City. Later, while she was playing one night in "The Gaslight South", a club in Florida, David Crosby walked in and was immediately struck by her ability and her appeal as an artist. He took her back to Los Angeles, where he set about introducing her and her music to his friends. Mitchell achieved fame in the late 1960's and was considered a key part of the Southern California folk rock scene. Throughout the 1970's, she explored and combined the pop and jazz genres. She's amassed a body of work that is highly respected by both critics and fellow musicians.

The New Andy Griffith Show 1971 After eight successful seasons, The Andy Griffith Show went off the air in 1968 as television's number-one show. In September 1970, CBS created a new series for Griffith, a comedy-drama titled 'Headmaster,' in which Griffith played the headmaster of a co-ed California prep school. Viewers, accustomed to Griffith playing a southern sheriff, rejected the show. It was scrapped after just three months. Undeterred, CBS then cast Griffith in a more folksy-type role as a small-town North Carolina mayor in The New Andy Griffith Show. Even though it was written and created by Aaron Ruben (who had created the original Andy Griffith Show) it too never caught on with viewers. It was yanked after just 12 episodes in CBS' infamous 'rural purge' when all its non-urban sitcoms were axed. Here is the opening of Griffith's second failure of the 1970-71 season.

Ann Sothern On Whats My Line Actress Ann Sothern was the mystery challenger on this episode of What's My Line. Note that her last name is misspelled as 'Southern' on her nameplate. That's a little on the embarrassing side, don't you think?

General George Custer with 7th Cavalry and their Families There is information here on Capt George Wallace (second from left), who was my husband Larry's great-great uncle. Capt. George D. Wallace, native of York, SC, son of Congressman Alexander Stuart Wallace and wife Nancy Lee Ratchford and 1872 graduate of West Point was the first Southerner to graduate after the War Between the States. He served first in his home state of South Carolina with the 7th Cavalry. When Indian problems increased and Reconstruction troubles were reduced all of the 7th Cavalry were sent to the Northern Indian problems, involving Sioux, Cheyenne, Nez Perce and others. It's interesting to note that his brother fought with the Confederacy. The rest of the information on this photo is in the comments section.

GWTW Actress Alicia Rhett Dead at 98 Alicia Rhett, the actress who played India Wilkes (Ashley Wilkes' sister) in the classic 1939 movie Gone With the Wind, has died at age 98 at a retirement home in Charleston, SC where she had resided since 2002. She would have turned 99 on February 1, 2014. GWTW was Rhett's only movie role, although she had a lengthy career as a stage actress. David O. Selznick saw one of Rhett's performances and asked her to audition for the role of Melanie Hamilton. She did not get it, of course. (Olivia de Havilland did.) Rhett instead got the much smaller role of India Wilkes who greatly dislikes Scarlett O'Hara and can see through her southern belle facade. Rhett did not care for Hollywood and returned to South Carolina once her commitment to GWTW was over. At the time of her passing, Rhett was the oldest of four living GWTW cast members whose names appear in the film's credits. (Olivia de Havilland now holds that distinction.) Rhett's great-grandfather was a secessionist senator.
