Carsons Early Bloopers on Who Do You Trust A bit of classic Johnny Carson on his earlier show "Who Do You Trust" from 1959. These were live segments. When you're watching a live television show you never quite know what will happen. Unlike most 50's TV footage that exists on grainy kinescope film, this footage comes from early B&W quad videotape which is a rarity with any 50's show. This footage was featured on a program from 1983 called "Life's Most Embarrassing Moments" hosted by John Ritter.

Bruins-Flyers Rivalry The 1970s provided excellent hockey for NHL fans. One of the best rivalries was the Boston Bruins versus the Philadelphia Flyers. The two teams met in the playoffs four times in five seasons. In 1974, the upstart Flyers surprised the favored Bruins in six games to win the Stanley Cup. Two years later, in 1976, Philadelphia beat the Bruins in five games in a semifinal series. A year later Boston avenged the earlier defeats with a four-game sweep in the semis. (The victory was so decisive it got Boston's Brad Park and Gerry Cheevers on the cover of Sports Illustrated on May 9, 1977.) The following year, 1978, Boston again convincingly beat Philadelphia in five games in a semifinal. The 2010 Stanley Cup playoffs featured these two teams meeting in the postseason, a conference semifinal, for the first time since 1978. The Flyers won in seven games after losing the first three.

Bobby Vee The Night Has a Thousand Eyes DID WE REALLY LOOK LIKE THAT WHEN WE DANCED?? One of the longest lasting of the teen idols of the early 60's, Bobby Vee got his lucky break when he and and his band the Shadows filled in for the late Buddy Holly at a 1959 Mason City, Iowa, concert a few days after Holly was killed in a plane crash. His 1961 summer release Take Good Care of My Baby went to #1 on the Billboard U.S. He went on to record a string of international hits in the 1960s, including Devil or Angel, Rubber Ball (1961), More Than I Can Say (1961), Run To Him (1961), The Night Has a Thousand Eyes (1963), and Come Back When You Grow Up (1967). Bobby Vee currently performs at Dick Clark's American Bandstand Theater in Branson, Missouri. He performs in the "Original Stars of American Bandstand" show along with Fabian, Chris Montez, Brian Hyland, and the Chiffons. His sons Tommy and Jeff both perform in the show with him. When I look at him now I realize how very young he was at the time.

Americas Sweetheart at 61 Happy Birthday to Sally Field! Sally is the daughter of actress Margaret Field and step-father Jock Mahoney, also an actor as well as a stuntman. Sally managed to finish high school, but early on it was clear she would follow in her parents' footsteps, and she soon got the lead role in the 1965 TV series "Gidget", quickly followed by "The Flying Nun" which ran from 1967-1970. American was in love with her wholesome, girl-next-door persona. The role that got Sally noticed as a more serious dramatic actress, was her portrayal of the title character in the TV movie Sybil, a woman suffering from a multiple personality disorder. The part won her an Emmy in the Best Actress category in 1976. Hollywood now saw Sally Field as more than just a pretty face. She had raw talent they were more than happy to exploit. But Sally didn't altogether abondon her comedic side and proved this by starring opposite Burt Reynolds in the two Smokey And The Bandit films. Nevertheless, her best work came through in dramatic roles, and Sally went on to win Oscars in the Best Actress category for both Norma Rae and Places In The Heart. Aside from acting, she has also produced and directed several projects for television, including directing an episode of the acclaimed mini-series, From The Earth To The Moon. Sally has two sons from her first marriage, Peter and Eli. And Samuel, from her second marriage.

The New Andy Griffith Show 1971 After eight successful seasons, The Andy Griffith Show went off the air in 1968 as television's number-one show. In September 1970, CBS created a new series for Griffith, a comedy-drama titled 'Headmaster,' in which Griffith played the headmaster of a co-ed California prep school. Viewers, accustomed to Griffith playing a southern sheriff, rejected the show. It was scrapped after just three months. Undeterred, CBS then cast Griffith in a more folksy-type role as a small-town North Carolina mayor in The New Andy Griffith Show. Even though it was written and created by Aaron Ruben (who had created the original Andy Griffith Show) it too never caught on with viewers. It was yanked after just 12 episodes in CBS' infamous 'rural purge' when all its non-urban sitcoms were axed. Here is the opening of Griffith's second failure of the 1970-71 season.

Connie Mack 1927 Baseball scholars will recognize the man on the cover of Time Magazine as Connie Mack, baseball's grand patriarch and most enduring manager. Born Cornelius McGillicuddy, Mack, a former catcher, managed the Pittsburgh Pirates for three seasons (1894 thorugh 1896) and the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 seasons (1901 through 1950) for the astonishing total of 7,755 games managed! The fact that he owned the Athletics ensured he never got fired. His teams fluctuated from greatness to ineptitude largely because he was reluctant to pay big salaries to keep his star players. (His 1931 Athletics won 107 of 154 games. In contrast, Mack's 1916 Athletics won just 36 games.) Mack never wore a uniform on the bench, always a business suit. Much beloved by the baseball establishment, Mack was once quoted as saying he preferred his teams to start well but finish in fourth place. That way he would make a profit for the season but his players couldn't demand raises!

1920 Olympic Games Poster This is a poster advertising the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, Belgium. Antwerp was awarded the 1920 Olympics largely for sentimental reasons. It had been the first war-ravaged country during the Great War. (It is interesting to note that Germany was not invited to participate in these Olympics.) Of all the official posters made for the modern Olympic Games since they were revived in 1896, this one appeals to me the most.
