I really don’t know if I should smoke…
… but my brothers and my sweetheart smoke, and it does give me a lot of pleasure.
Women began to smoke, so they tell me, just about the time they began to vote, but that’s hardly a reason for women smoking. I guess I just like to smoke, that’s all.
It so happens that I smoke CHESTERFIELD. They seem to be milder and they have a very pleasing taste.

Sadly when I think of Yul Brynner I don't immediately think of The King and I or The Magnificent Seven. I think of this public service ad from the mid-1980s that aired after he died from cancer. Pretty chilling, wasn't it?

Released in 1968, this was the first of the celebrity 'don't smoke' appeals. Bill Talman played the DA on 'Perry Mason' and was under very heavy medication at the time this was filmed, six weeks before his death. The ad didn't start running until after his death, so the effect was even more profound.

i remember my best girlfriend's grandmother laying on the couch reading Confidential Mmagazine and smoking Pall Mall cigaretes. we were too young at the time to know what the magazine was about, but knew it was bad (not compared to what's out there today) as it came in a brown envelope delivered to her gram's house.

Smoking gives people pleasure. Pleasure enhances your disposition. Therefore smoking is good for you. That was the logic Rock Hudson used to promote Camel cigarettes in this 1955 ad.

When the Canadian province of Ontario was debating outlawing smoking in restaurants and bars, this was one of the posters it used. The argument was that wait staff, cooks, bartenders, and so on, deserve a smoke-free environment. It worked. Ontario has gone completely smoke-free in bars and restaurants.
