Le Manège enchanté (known in English as The Magic Roundabout) was a children's television programme created in France in 1963 by Serge Danot. Some five hundred five-minute-long episodes were made and were originally broadcast between 1964 and 1971 on ORTF.
However, it was in the United Kingdom that the series became best known. The English version was narrated by Eric Thompson, the father of Emma Thompson, and broadcast from 18 October 1965 to January 1977. This version of the show attained cult status, and was watched as much by adults for its dry humour as by the children for whom it was intended.

Originally known as "You'll Never Get Rich" and then "The Phil Silvers Show," the granddaddy of all military sitcoms was broadcast from 1955 to 1959. Silvers starred as Master Sgt. Ernie Bilko, the con artist supreme who turns Fort Baxter into his personal base of operations for one get-rich-quick scheme after another. Harvey Lembeck, Joe E. Ross, and Maurice Gosfield as Pvt. Doberman were among the members of Bilko's platoon, and Paul Ford played the camp commander. . .

Only one episode of Hogan's Heroes was ever shot in black-and-white: the pilot episode. Here is the introduction. You'll note a few changes from the later introductions. The pilot episode had a Russian character in it and Sergeant Carter was absent. Once the series began in earnest, the Russian character was ditched and replaced by Larry Hovis' Sgt. Carter. (Hovis had appeared in the pilot episode as a guest character.) This move actually better reflected reality. Russians captured by the Germans were not treated nearly as well as those from other Allied countries. There would have been no Russians in a Luftstalag.

Critics accurately called it the Epidemic That Never Was. In February 1976, a 19-year-old Army recruit, Pvt. David Lewis, reported to his drill sergeant at Fort Dix that he was feeling lethargic. Shortly thereafter he died of something similar to the deadly Spanish influenza that killed 20 million people in 1918 and 1919. After four other soldiers at Fort Dix became ill, Congress decided to enact an ambitious $135 million program with the lofty goal to innoculate all 220 milliion people in the United States against Swine Flu--so called because it was usually found in pigs. This photo shows president Gerald Ford signing the legislation into law. It proved to be wholly unnecessary. Only one person, Pvt. David Lewis, died of the flu. Many more are believed to have died from adverse reactions to the innoculations. The end result was national cynicism about all innoculation programs.

Russian filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein's silent 1927 masterpiece Battleship Potemkin, about the failed 1905 Russian Revolution, contains this memorable and powerful scene. Tzarist troops open fire on demonstrators assembled on a staircase in Odessa. One is a mother with a baby carriage.

1967, Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot perfom "Bonnie and Clyde".
They both look so cool
Music and lyrics written by Serge Gainsbourg:
translated here:
You’ve read the story
Of Jesse James
How he lived
How he died
You liked that, didn’t you?
Yet you still ask for more
And well,
Listen to the story
Of Bonnie and Clyde
Then here it is,
Clyde has a girlfriend
She’s beautiful, her first name
Is Bonnie
And the two of them form
The Barrow gang
Their names
Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow
Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde
When I knew Clyde
Before all that
He was a loyal guy
Honest and right
You’ve got to believe
That it’s society
Which definitely ruined him
Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde
All the things that they wrote
About her and me
They claim we kill
In cold blood
It’s not funny
But we really have
To silence
The one that starts to scream
Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde
Every time a policeman
Gets killed
Or a garage or a bank
Is attacked
For the police
It’s not a mystery
Signed, Clyde Barrow
Bonnie Parker
Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde
Now every time
We try to rest
To get comfortable
In an apartment
Within three days
The tac tac tac's back
The machine guns
Return to the attack
Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde
One of these days
We will fall together
And I don’t care
It’s for Bonnie that I tremble
It doesn’t matter
If they get my skin (kill me)
Me Bonnie
I tremble for Clyde Barrow
Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde
Anyway
They couldn’t have stayed longer
The only solution
Was to die
But more than one followed them
Into hell
When they died
Barrow and Bonnie Parker
Bonnie and Clyde
Bonnie and Clyde

A very attractive poster for the 1941 Gary Cooper movie Sergeant York. (I've always thought conscientious objectors should be made to watch this excellent film.)

In Their Own Words ..
Remembering the Forgotten Theater of World War II
The China - Burma - India Theater
Throughout the history of the world, in times of peril and aggression, nations have called upon their military forces for defense against their enemies. Our country has been very fortunate for, whenever the men and women who comprise our Army, Navy, air forces and other services have been called upon; they have served their country bravely and faithfully, regardless of where they were sent or what they were asked to do. Many Americans remember their dedicated service and are appreciative of their performances, but, too soon after the danger is over, the services of these veterans fade into oblivion. — 1st Lt. Albert O. Wilkat CBI Veteran, Pilot, 2nd Troop Carrier Squadron, USAAF
to the men of Merrill's Marauders
to the pilots and crews of the Burma Banshees
and to ALL who served in the CBI
"When you get back, tell them of us and say
For your tomorrow, we gave our today."
