Beauty Shop or Torture Chamber Teresa, get a load of this!! These black contraptions were used for giving permanent waves, and was considered the state-of-the-art way to stylish hair. I think I'd have second thoughts if I walked into a shop and saw these!!

Baby Face Nelson Lester Gillis, better known as Baby Face Nelson, due to his youthful appearance, was a diminutive 5'4" tall bank robber in the 1930s. Born in Chicago, he began his criminal career stealing cars. He also worked for a time as an enforcer for Al Capone, fought with Capone's ally and outfit member Anthony Accetturo, and received broken bones for his troubles, but he was let go due to being "too violent" for Capone to control. Nelson came to greater prominence in 1934, when he joined the Dillinger gang. He was the antithesis of popular, Robin Hood-like gangsters of the Depression era. Having a psychopathic bent, he didn't hesitate to kill lawmen and innocent bystanders. In contrast though, Nelson was a devoted husband and father who often had his wife and children with him while running from the law. A running machine gun battle with FBI agents took place on November 27, 1934. It started when Nelson, his wife, and John Paul Chase were driving down a road and saw a police car driving the opposite direction. Nelson hated police and federal agents and used a list of license plates he had compiled to actively hunt them at every opportunity. He had recognized the car and decided to chase them. Once they both stopped, the shootout started. Nelson and Chase used their car for cover, however, he charged at the police and opened fire. Even though he was shot 17 times, he was still able to steal the agents car after killing them. Nelson's wife and Chase helped him into the car and with Nelson giving directions, Chase drove away from the scene. Nelson succumbed to his wounds at approximately 8pm that evening and was unceremoniously dumped near a Skokie, Illinois, cemetery. He holds the dubious distinction of being personally responsible for the killing of more federal agents than any other criminal.

Boston Marathon Cheater Rosie Ruiz On April 21, 1980 unheralded Rosie Ruiz was the first woman to cross the finish line in the prestigious Boston Marathon. Her apparent victory in record time was immediately suspicious. First, everyone assumed Jacqueline Gareau was the leading female. Nobody saw Gareau lose the lead in the race at anytime after the eighth mile. Furthermore, Ruiz's running shoes were barely scuffed and she was hardly perspiring in the unseasonably warm weather. Two Harvard University students signed affidavits stating they saw Ruiz illegally enter the course just a few hundred yards from the finish line. Ruiz denied the accusations and maintained she had run unnoticed among a pack of male runners. Few people believed her story and she was subsequently disqualified after an investigation. To this day Ruiz has stubbornly refused to return her winner's medal, so Gareau was given a larger medal. Twenty five years later Gareau was ceremoniously allowed to break the tape--a thrill that Ruiz deprived her from experiencing in 1980. Ruiz had qualified to run in Boston by finishing the 1979 New York City Marathon with a decent time, but investigators discovered she had cheated there too. (She left the course after a few hundred yards, took a subway train to an area near the finish line, illegally re-entered the race and finished 26th.) Ruiz promised to prove her innocence by winning the 1980 New York City Marathon. She never showed up.

USA USSR 1980 Olympic Hockey It was one of the greatest moments in American sports history--but very few Americans saw it when it actually happened. The 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team was made up of college players. (North American professionals were ineligible until 1998.) The Soviet Union's state-sponsored "amateurs" had dominated Olympic hockey, winning gold medals in 1956, 1964, 1968, 1972, and 1976. In an exhibition game prior to the 1980 Olympics, the USSR manhandled the awe-struck Americans 11-1 at Madison Square Garden. However, in the medal round of the Lake Placid Olympics, the Americans pulled off an enormous upset, beating the mighty Soviets 4-3. Only those Americans who lived close enough to the Canadian border to pick up CTV's feed actually saw the game live. ABC only showed a tape-delayed broadcast later that evening. (ABC did not want to deprive soap opera fans from seeing General Hospital that day!) Watch the last 90 seconds of the game and listen as a young Al Michaels makes his famous call: 'Do you believe in miracles? Yes!' Two days later the Americans defeated Finland for the gold medal.

The Freshman 1925 Myopic Harold Lloyd stars as THE FRESHMAN. He's sooooooooo excited about going to college that he has been working to earn spending money, practicing college yells, and learning a special way of introducing himself that he saw in a movie. When he arrives at Tate University, he soon becomes the target of practical jokes and ridicule (sounds current, doesn't it?)
