Carnegie Libraries Andrew Carnegie made a vast fortune in the steel industry. His philosophy was that a man should spend half his life acquiring wealth and the other half using it for good works. Accordingly, Carnegie financed the building of the astonishing total of 2,509 public libraries in the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries. Carnegie's passion for libraries began at a young age. He saw the value of public libraries as places for learning and community centers. Cities or towns that wanted a Carnegie Library had to provide the building site and maintain the library after it was built. Carnegie's money paid for everything else. A carnegie library always had to have 'open stacks' so the public could browse, and it had to provide free service. Carnegie's foundation built libraries from 1885 to 1929. (Carnegie himself died in 1919 at age 84.) Many of these libraries are still in use today, such as the one pictured here in Grass Valley, California.

Apollo 100 - Joy (1972) What does "Joy" mean to you? Rest and relaxation on a holiday? Or is it something else? Way back in 1972, a certain instrumental was heard for the public called ''Joy''. It's from a non-vocal group called Apollo 100 that brought no disappointment, actually speeding it up from what the original German composer had written years past. German? Why would I even mention that? The British players were not around for so long as they were basically just "pro" session associates. Actually, they disbanded a year later as they were unable to successfully redo what they did with the "Joy" session. Tom Parker was really the man behind it all as he was what you would call a multi-instrumentalist. It really stood out then as it was known as a copied arrangement that another bunch called Jigsaw, again from the UK did in 1970 with Germany's Johann Sebastian Bach's "Jesu, Joy Of Man's Desiring". The only difference is that Apollo's was well on its way to a six positioning, once 1972's radio stations picked up on it's potential. Have you ever heard the Bach inspired number in a few recent films? It still has some significance for those that dig on what is really cool about the seventies. *E*

Without a Clue- Game 13 "Without a Clue" has returned. Just look at the background and look what is going on in the shot. Being attentive is the key to knowing where it is from. Not something that you would overlook. So, can you tell me? The previous game was not so hard, but I am wondering if this one is just as difficult? Is it? ***LOOKS LIKE ERIC HAS "ANSWERED" THIS ONE QUICKLY. I found the film disturbing when I first saw it. Once was enough. *E*

Susan Anton - 1979 Feel like remembering a golden Susan now? How about remembering something called "Cliffhangers"? Can you remember her weekly carried-over stories that featured the woman in dangers in the "Stop Susan Williams" part? It only lasted roughly four weeks until it was stopped. Too bad. It was a favourite of many then. You may recall she was a Miss California Beauty Queen and second runner up in '69 with Miss America. In many different countries, considered a top small screen personality, only during those years back then. You may of even seen her in a few Muriel Cigars advertisements years ago, too. In 1980, she was nominated for a Golden Globe for her film portrayal as Best New Star that year for a woman. Remember "Cannon Ball Run 2"? The late 1980s, and the early, early 1990s, you could of saw her on a certain popular swimming suit show. Also, she had the ability to get herself in the supermarket magazines. Do you remember when she was seeing Sly in the early eighties while he was still married? You know what I am talking about here, right? How about in later years with the late Dudley Moore? Do you recall the spring of '79 now? Only on for a short-run, you would of seen variety and her abilities weekly with a smile. It was shown for about a month back then. It was after this, Susan got an Olympian-type film offer. You can see her in Vegas nowadays doing her thing. *E*

I Am My Own Grandpa Guy Lombardo Trio Now many many years ago when I was twenty-three I was married to a widow who was pretty as can be. This widow had a grown-up daughter who had hair of red. My father fell in love with her and soon they too were wed. Oh, I'm my own grandpa I'm my own grandpa It sounds funny I know But it really is so Oh, I'm my own grandpa. This made my dad my son-in-law and changed my very life. My daughter was my mother, 'cause she was my father's wife. To complicate the matter even though it brought me joy, I soon became the father of a bouncing baby boy. My little baby then became a brother-in-law to Dad, And so became my uncle though it was very sad. For if he was my uncle then that also made him brother Of the widow's grown-up daughter who of course was my step-mother. Father's wife then had a son who kept him on the run, And he became my grandchild for he was my daughter's son. My wife is now my mother's mother and it makes me blue, Because although she is my wife she's my grandmother, too. Now if my wife is my grandmother then I'm her grandchild, And every time I think of it it nearly drives me wild, For now I have become the strangest case I ever saw. As husband of my grandmother, I am my own grandpa.

Harry Truman Assassination Attempt An assassination attempt on President Harry Truman occurred on November 1, 1950. It was perpetrated by two Puerto Rican pro-independence activists, Oscar Collazo and Griselio Torresola. It occurred while Truman was residing at Blair House during extensive White House renovations. The attempt resulted in the deaths of White House police officer Leslie Coffelt, and Torresola. Truman was unharmed. Torresola walked up Pennsylvania Avenue from the west side while his partner, Oscar Collazo, walked up to Capital police officer Donald Birdzell on the steps of Blair House. Approaching Birdzell from behind, Collazo pulled out a handgun, pointed it at the officer's back, and pulled the trigger. Since he had failed to cock it, nothing happened. Collazo managed to fire the weapon just as Birdzell was turning to face him, striking the officer in his right knee. Secret Service agent Floyd Boring and White House police officer Joseph Davidson heard the shot and opened fire on Collazo. Collazo returned fire and soon found himself outgunned as the wounded Birdzell joined the shootout. Soon after, Collazo was struck by two rounds in the head and right arm, while other officers joined the gunfight. Torresola approached a guard booth at the west corner of Blair House where an officer, Private Leslie Coffelt, was sitting inside. Torresola quickly pivoted from left to right around the opening of the booth. Coffelt was taken completely by surprise. Torresola fired four shots from his Luger at close range. Three shots struck Coffelt in the chest and abdomen, a fourth went through his tunic. Coffelt slumped in his chair, mortally wounded. Torresola turned his attention to plainclothes White House policeman Joseph Downs. Downs, who had just chatted with Coffelt, proceeded down the walkway to the basement door at the west end of the Blair-Lee house when he heard shots. Downs noticed Torresola, but he was shot in the hip before he could draw his weapon. Downs turned back towards the house, and was shot twice more by Torresola, once in the back and once in the neck. Downs staggered to the basement door, opened it, slid in, and then slammed the door behind him, denying Torresola entry into Blair House. Torresola turned his attention to the shoot-out between his partner, Collazo, and several other law enforcement officers. Torresola saw wounded policeman Donald Birdzell aiming at Collazo from the south side of Pennsylvania Avenue. Torresola aimed and shot Birdzell in the left knee from a distance of approximately 40 feet. Now shot in both knees, Birdzell was effectively incapacitated. (He would later recover.) Soon after, the severely wounded Collazo was hit in the chest by a ricochet shot from Davidson and was incapacitated too. Torresola stood to the immediate left of Blair House steps while he reloaded. At the same time, Truman, who had been napping in his second-floor bedroom, was awoken by the gunfire. Truman went to his bedroom window, opened it, and looked outside. From where he stood reloading, Torresola was 31 feet away from that window. It is unknown whether either man saw the other. At the same time, the wounded Coffelt staggered out of his guard booth, leaned against it, and aimed his revolver at Torresola, who was approximately 30 feet away. Coffelt fired, hitting Torresola two inches above the ear, killing him instantly. Coffelt himself died four hours later. Officer Coffelt's widow, Cressie E. Coffelt, was asked by the President and the Secretary of State to go to Puerto Rico, where she received condolences from various Puerto Rican leaders and crowds. Mrs. Coffelt always absolved the island's people of blame for the acts of the two gunmen. A plaque at Blair House commemorates Coffelt's sacrifice and heroism. The day room for the U.S. Secret Service's Uniformed Division at Blair House is also named for Coffelt.

Speedy Gonzales Deemed Politically Incorrect Speedy Gonzales, the cunning cartoon Mexican mouse that could run at blazing speeds, was first introduced by Warner Bros. in 1953. (Mel Blanc provided Speedy's voice.) By 1999, however, the Cartoon Network ceased to air Speedy Gonzales. In an interview with Fox News on March 28, 2002, Cartoon Network spokeswoman Laurie Goldberg commented, 'It hasn't been on the air for years because of its ethnic stereotypes.' This is widely believed to refer to Speedy's fellow mice, who are all shown as being very slow and lazy, and sometimes even appear intoxicated. This is particularly true of Speedy's cousin, Slowpoke Rodriguez, who is exceptionally slow and lazy. In one cartoon, titled Gonzales' Tamales, the town mice instigate a feud between Speedy and Sylvester the Cat because Speedy has been stealing the hearts of all the females. Much of the dialogue between Mexican characters is in English and the small amount of Spanish that peppers the dialogue consists of basic greetings, goodbyes, exclamations, and misplaced references to popular Mexican foods. Criticism prompted the Cartoon Network to largely shelve Speedy's films when it gained exclusive rights to broadcast them in 1999. However, fan campaigns to put Speedy back on the air and lobbying by the League of United Latin American Citizens saw the shorts return to air in 2002. Ironically Speedy Gonzales remains a very popular character in Latin America. In Mexico, Speedy Gonzales cartoons have been part of the regular programing of Televisa's Canal 5 national channel ever since it was created. In 2010, a Looney Tunes New Year's Day marathon on the Cartoon Network showed the episode 'Mexican Boarders' featuring both Speedy and Slowpoke. On the Looney Tunes Golden Collection, the Speedy cartoons are prefaced by a disclaimer that states: 'The cartoons you are about to see are products of their time. They may depict some of the ethnic and racial prejudices that were commonplace in American society. These depictions were wrong then and are wrong today. While the following does not represent the WB view of society, these cartoons are being presented as they were originally created, because to do otherwise would be the same as to claim these prejudices never existed.'
