Johnny Rivers BABY I NEED YOUR LOVIN Here's another performer whose career was launched with the help of Ed Sullivan. Johnny Rivers was born John Henry Ramistella, on Nov 7, 1942, in New York. He was versatile enough to do folk songs, blues, covers of old-time rock 'n' roll songs, and some original material, all of them in his own unique style. Rivers's greatest success came in the mid and late 1960s with a string of hit songs (including "Seventh Son," "Poor Side of Town" and "Secret Agent Man"), but he has continued to record and perform to the present.

Undercover Putin Met President Reagan A picture has emerged apparently showing Russia's Prime Minister Vladimir Putin in his former days as a KGB officer. The 20-year old photo depicts two world leaders - US President Ronald Reagan and the Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev - in Moscow. But, according to the man who took the photo, it also captures Mr Putin disguised as a tourist. Pete Souza, now President Obama's official photographer, captured the moment when he worked for President Reagan during the political thaw that soon ended the Cold War. Mr Reagan took a stroll around Red Square accompanied by the Russian leader, who then introduced him to a group of tourists. In an interview, Mr Souza recounted being surprised at the "pointed" questions these supposed tourists asked the US leader.

Judy Collins is well known all over the world as an American folk and standards singer and songwriter, known for the stunning purity of her soprano, for her eclectic tastes in the material she records, which has included folk, showtunes, pop, and rock and roll. Bobby Goldsboro LITTLE THINGS From the tv show Hullabaloo in 1965. Bobby Goldsboro started out in the early sixties as a guitarist with Roy Orbison. During his three years with Orbison he traveled all over the world and even toured with The Beatles. In 1964 he began his solo career by recording the first of a string of sixteen top-forty hits, “See the Funny Little Clown.” One of his first concert bookings had him opening for the Rolling Stones on their first U.S. tour. More million-selling hits followed, setting the stage for 1968 and the classic, “Honey,” which became the largest-selling record in the world. “Watching Scotty Grow,” “Little Green Apples” and “With Pen in Hand” have also become classics.

Leon Russell Leon was first known mostly as a session musician, and played played with artists as varied as Jerry Lee Lewis, Phil Spector and The Rolling Stones. He had a solo career spanning the genres of rock, blues, and gospel. His first songwriting hit was for Joe Cocker's 1969 "Delta Lady", and Russell went on to organise Cocker's Mad Dogs and Englishmen tour. The man can beat a piano. He is on tour and I will be seeing him tonight (11-15-07) in Virginia Beach at a fitting venue for his style of music.

Bo Diddley In 1955, Bo Diddley became the first African American performer to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. Apparently Sullivan was infuriated when Diddley sang this, his self-titled song instead of what was planned, Tennessee Ernie Ford's hit, "Sixteen Tons".

Polyester leisure suit The ultimate men's fashion statement from the 1970s: the much-maligned polyester leisure suit! Polyester was first developed by British researchers during the Second World War. It became a consumer item in 1963 when an Illinois chemist named Delbert Meyer came up with a better way of producing the material. The new threads were blended with natural fibers to create clothing that almost felt like cotton or wool but was washable and wrinkle resistant. Cut from rolls of spongy double-knitted polyester, leisure suits came in all variety of colours: earth tones, blues, racing green, maroon, and the entire spectrum of pastel hues. Airless and horribly uncomfortable in hot and humid weather, polyester leisure suits clung to the wearer's arms and legs. The highly flammable synthetic melted when it burned and stuck to its wearer like napalm. Upper-class men were not impressed, and preferred to stick to their genuine wools, silks and cottons. One fashion writer declared, 'Leisure suits were just too democratic. They made everybody look like a bus driver.'

Bay City Rollers Saturday Night The Bay City Rollers, a Scottish band, were hyped as the next coming of the Beatles in the mid-1970s. It didn't quite work out that way. They had a few moderately successful songs--and one huge hit: Saturday Night. You just have to sing along with this one.
