Ripleys Believe It Or Not Ripley's Believe It Or Not was a regular feature in newspapers for many decades. Its creator, Robert Ripley, hoped to be a professional baseball player but an arm injury ended that dream. Instead, Ripley decided to write about sports. He compiled some odd sports facts and presented them in cartoon form. Ripley intended to call it Champs & Chumps, but settled on Believe It Or Not so he could go beyond sports. His first cartoon panel premiered in the New York Globe on December 19, 1918. At one point, there were 80 million loyal readers of Believe It Or Not in daily newspapers. Much of Ripley's research was done by Norbert Pearlroth. For 52 years, Pearlroth spent 10 hours per day, six days a week in the New York Public Library searching for obscure facts and trivia for Ripley's cartoons!

Roy Orbison In Dreams 1963 "In Dreams" is a song composed and sung by American rock and roll performer, Roy Orbison. An operatic ballad of lost love, it was released as a 45rpm single on Monument Records in February 1963. The song's opening line refers to "A candy-colored clown they call the Sandman". The Sandman is a character in Hans Christian Andersen's children stories who brings sleep and dreams by sprinkling magic sand onto the sleeping. It became the title track on the album In Dreams, released July 1963, and also appears on his 1989 posthumous album A Black & White Night Live from the 1988 HBO television special. "In Dreams" was used famously in an infamous whorehouse scene in David Lynch's Blue Velvet (1986). An effeminate drug dealer, played by Dean Stockwell, lip synchs the song at the insistence of a sadistic criminal played by Dennis Hopper. Later, Hopper's character utters the lines "In dreams I talk to you... in dreams you're MINE - all the time!" as he threatens Kyle Maclachlan's character. The song also appeared in and provided the title for Neil Jordan's 1999 psychological thriller In Dreams. If the structure of a standard pop song is ABABCAB (verse-chorus, verse-chorus, bridge, verse-chorus), then the structure of "In Dreams" is ABCDE: the lyrics "A candy-colored clown," "I close my eyes," "In dreams I walk with you," "But just before the dawn," and "It's too bad that all these things" all introduce sections of new musical material that are not repeated. In 1988, songwriters Will Jennings and Richard Kerr wrote a response to "In Dreams", called "In The Real World", which Orbison recorded for his 1989 album Mystery Girl. In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine named "In Dreams" as one of the "500 Greatest Songs of All Time."

Everyones Gone To The Moon - Jonathan King 'Everyone's Gone To The Moon' is a song that was written and recorded as the debut single of the British singer-songwriter, producer and impresario Jonathan King. The song, which was released in 1965 while King was still an undergraduate at Cambridge University, immediately shot him to international fame. It was a top-ten hit in the UK and also reached #17 on the US Billboard Hot 100. It went on to sell more than 4.5 million copies world-wide and so established King in the music industry. It has since been performed by hundreds of other artists, including Marlene Dietrich, Nina Simone, Frank Sinatra and Percy Faith. Source: Wikipedia

General Hospital actress Kepler dies age 49 Actress Shell Kepler, who for years played the gossipy nurse Amy Vining on the TV soap opera "General Hospital," has died. She was 49. Kepler died Friday at Oregon Health & Science University hospital, which did not give the cause of death. Kepler's busybody character on "General Hospital" was a fan favorite and enjoyed a long run, 1979-2002. In addition to her run on "General Hospital," she was also in a 1982 Joan Collins film, "Homework," and a couple of episodes of the situation comedy "Three's Company."

Sugar Ray Leonard One of my all-time favorite boxers, Sugar Ray Leonard, is featured on the cover of a 1979 issue of The Ring magazine. The late 1970s and early 1980s saw a renaissance in the sweet science. Leonard's skill and popularity were major reasons.
