One of college football's greatest blunders occurred during the 1929 Rose Bowl game between California and Georgia Tech. Cal player Roy Riegels picked up a Georgia Tech fumble--and scampered 65 yards in the wrong direction! He was chased down by his own teammates, turned around inside his own five-yard line, and gang-tackled by a wave of Tech players. Cal punted on the next play, but the punt was blocked through the end zone for a safety. The two points proved to be the difference in Georgia Tech's 8-7 victory. Riegels was known as Wrong-Way Riegels for the rest of his life.
