Despite not being particularly popular, this series is often remembered for an incident that occurred on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson. During production of the series, Rickles appeared on Tonight Show with guest host Bob Newhart. While poking fun at Newhart, in faux-anger, Rickles slammed the cigarette box which Johnny Carson kept on his desk and broke it. When Carson returned to the show and discovered this, he took a camera crew to the studio next door where Sharkey was being taped. Carson disrupted the taping in order to tease Rickles about it, to the delight of the studio audiences of both shows. Carson also teased Harrison Page by speaking to him in an exaggerated AAVE accent. This incident was often replayed in Tonight Show retrospectives and was considered a highlight of the 1970s era of the show.

Dean Martin was one of America's greatest legends in the entertainment industry. He is sorely missed even to this day. He honors or roasts his beloved friend and American icon, Frank Sinatra, in one of his many roasts. In my opinion, even the half-hour infomercial is far more entertaining than anything on television today. I miss people like Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra, and so many others. There are more people who are gone than living with us like Don Rickles, Peter Falk, and Ruth Buzzi. Frank Sinatra's roast is pretty relaxed from what we know. We're glad to see celebrities cut loose and be themselves and poke fun at this man. Nobody will ever have the roasts that Dean ever put together in Las Vegas. Of course, people were smoking cigarettes (God forbid that you display any smoking on television anymore) and drinking liquor and being human anymore. Those days are gone forever and now you have a bit of history with these episodes. Even though they drank and smoked, they always appeared to be having fun at themselves.

From 1976, here is a classic "Tonight" Show bit, where Johnny Carson confronts Don Rickles, who had broken Johnny's cigarette box the night before!! I taped this in 1977, as part of the 15th Anniversary of the Tonight Show. This is where Carson discovers that Rickles broke his cigarette box the night before, and Carson walks right onto the set of "CPO Sharkey" while Rickles was doing the show live, and confronts him! When this clip was on YouTube it had over 500 comments, many negative, since Carson makes some "off-color" remarks (by today's PC standards) to Harrison Page, the African-American actor in C.P.O. Sharkey. Draw your own conclusions.
