We Will Miss You Brett Somers WESTPORT, Conn. (AP) — Actress and comedian Brett Somers, who amused game show fans with her quips on the "Match Game" in the 1970s, has died, her son said. She was 83. Somers died Saturday at her home in Westport of stomach and colon cancer, Adam Klugman said Monday. Hosted by Gene Rayburn, "Match Game" was the top game show during much of the 1970s. Contestants would try to match answers to nonsense questions with a panel of celebrities; much of the humor came from the racy quips and putdowns. Shows from the 1973-79 run, featuring regulars like Somers, Richard Dawson and Charles Nelson Reilly, are still seen on cable TV's GSN (formerly Game Show Network.) Somers married actor Jack Klugman, the future star of the television shows "Quincy" and "The Odd Couple," in 1953. The two separated in 1974, but never divorced.

Henry Blake Killed On MASH Thirty-nine years ago today (March 18, 1975) one of the most memorable--and shocking--moments in American television was broadcast: In the final episode of the third season of MASH, Lt. Colonel Henry Blake, the commanding officer of the 4077th MASH in Korea, was killed while on his way home. McLean Stevenson had wanted to leave MASH after three seasons, so the show's writers used Stevenson's departure to make a powerful statement: some people go off to war and don't come back. Never before had a sitcom's character's death been so dramatically part of the script. Colonel Blake's death had always been part of the episode's script, but the final page had been hidden from the cast members in order to keep their reactions throughout the rest of the show true to the happy storyline of Blake returning home to his family in Bloomington, IN. Only when all the other scenes had been filmed did director Larry Gelbart inform the cast about the missing scene. This clip shows company clerk Radar O'Reilly (Gary Burghoff) interrupting an OR session to deliver the tragic news. After the show aired, CBS was inundated with hundreds of letters from viewers who were outraged that a situation comedy had become a situation tragedy. Every person who wrote a letter got a hand-written reply explaining that MASH wanted to show the cruel realities of war.

Hartford Circus Fire 1944 On July 6, 1944, 168 people perished in a big-top fire in Hartford, CT while attending a performance of the Ringling Brothers, Barnum and Bailey Circus. The circus tent had been treated with a combination of paraffin and gasoline for waterproofing, causing the tent to burn rapidly. The cause of the fire is unknown. Careless smoking is considered the most likely cause, though some people suspect arson. Many of those who died were trampled by the fleeing crowd. Others simply refused to leave the burning tent until they had located their friends and family. Circuses were banned in Connecticut for many years afterward. Among the 6,700 people who survived the blaze were famed clown Emmett Kelly, future Connecticut lieutenant governor Eunice Groark, and 13-year-old spectator Charles Nelson Reilly.

Latrell Sprewell - Outrageous Quote Former NBA player Latrell Sprewell had a special gift: He could alienate just about everyone with his astonishing lack of responsibility. In 1997, as a member of the Golden State Warriors, Sprewell was suspended for 68 games after he attempted to choke his own coach who, during a practice, had asked him to make sharper passes. As bad as that incident was, Sprewell is probably best known for rejecting a three-year, $21-million contract extension in 2004 offered by the Minnesota Timberwolves. The amount actually was a pay reduction compared to the $14.6 million he was making in 2004-05 as a 34-year-old. Insulted by the offer, Sprewell publicly expressed outrage, declaring, "I have a family to feed... If [Minnesota general manager] Glen Taylor wants to see my family fed, he better cough up some money. Otherwise, you're going to see these kids in one of those Sally Struthers commercials soon." Sports Illustrated's Rick Reilly had a field day with Sprewell's assertion that he could not feed his family on such a salary. Reilly pointed out, among other things, that Sprewell could buy 18 McDonald's franchises with his $8.3-million-after-taxes income. After declining the Timberwolves' extension, and, having once more drawn the ire of fans and sports media, Sprewell had the worst season of his career in the final year of his contract. In the summer of 2005, the Denver Nuggets, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Houston Rockets all expressed interest in signing Sprewell, but no agreements were reached. Sprewell later lost custody of his children, had his home and yacht reposessed, and declared personal bankruptcy.
