Then and Now -Shelly Fabares Michele Ann Marie "Shelley" Fabares (born January 19, 1944) is an American actress and singer, known primarily for her roles on movies, soap operas and television. The naturally blonde-haired Fabares is best known for her roles as Donna Reed's daughter and oldest child, Mary Stone, on the long-running The Donna Reed Show (a role she played from 1958 to 1963), and as Craig T. Bewitched Switches Darrins A great many TV sitcoms have experienced cast changes during their runs. None, however, was more startling to the average viewer than when the role of Darrin Stephens on Bewitched went suddenly from Dick York to Dick Sargent in 1969. York had portrayed Darrin since the series premiered in 1964. However, York had suffered a severe back injury while filming a movie in 1959. He became heavily dependent on pain killers for sleeping and getting through the day. By 1968 York's back injury was so crippling that he had to be written out of several episodes and/or the show's shooting schedule had to be changed to accommodate his absences. Often, when York was able to work, his scenes were structured so he could lie down on a couch or a bed. Finally in January 1969 he passed out during a taping and had to be rushed to a hospital. During York's hospitalization, producer William Asher asked York if he wanted out of the show. York knew he couldn't continue so he reluctantly agreed. He was replaced by the much taller Dick Sargent who played a more assertive version of Darrin. How did the show account for the dramatic change in appearance of its leading male character? One idea was to have Darrin the victim of a spell that made him grow. Eventually it was decided that nothing would be said; Sargent just assumed York's old role without explanation. Sargent played Darrin until the show's run ended in 1972. Bewitched fans constantly debate which actor played Darrin better. Sadly, York fell on hard times after leaving the series. Bad investments drained his savings. He died in poverty in 1992.

Red Wings vs Prisoners - 1954 While occasional outdoor games have been all the rage in the NHL since 2003, the first known outdoor game played by an NHL team occurred on Tuesday, February 2, 1954 when the Detroit Red Wings played a team comprised of inmates from Marquette Branch Prison. The correctional facility in the state's upper peninsula housed some of the toughest convicts in Michigan. Most were confined to their cells 23 hours per day. Red Wings owner Jack Adams surprisingly agreed to the game--some say it was a personal favor for some notable inmates. A few Red Wings initially feared for their personal safety, but the warden assured them they were in no danger. "We were told we'd be special guests," recalled Ted Lindsay. "The inmates were looking forward to it. If anyone tried to harm us, he'd be dead in two minutes." The prisoners were put to work make to make a viable outdoor rink inside the prison walls. The weather cooperated nicely, with 22-degree Fahrenheit temperatures and no wind, which made the natural ice perfect. Several Red Wings said the ice surface was better than was what found in some NHL buildings. The game was not even close to being competitive. After the Red Wings jumped out to an 18-0 lead after the first period, the score was no longer kept. Several Red Wings joined the prison team for the final two periods to make things a little bit more competitive. Nevertheless, the prisoners presented the victorious Red Wings with a bucket modified to look like a trophy as a memento of their visit and easy triumph. Detroit would win a more substantial trophy--the Stanley Cup--that spring.

Hymn To The Fallen With Remembrance Sunday coming around and the Poppy appeal in full swing I thought I'd add my thanks to all those who served and still serve in the armed forces. Freedom is a word thrown about too easily but for these brave people who knows what our world would be like? 'Lest we forget'.

Boy in the Plastic Bubble Final Scene This movie was very touching and the theme song is another Paul Williams gem. I think it was this movie where John Travolta started dating Diana Hyland who passed away from breast cancer in 1977. Hyland won an Emmy for this role.

2002 Breeders Cup Betting Scandal On October 26, 2002, Christopher Harn and two buddies masterminded one of the most talked about betting scandals ever. The annual Breeders Cup races are often called the Super Bowl of horse racing. Six races are run. The popular Pick Six wager requires a bettor to select the winners of all six races prior to the first race being run. The payoff can be enormous if anyone achieves the feat. As an employee of the computer company that handled off-track betting, Harn used his technical know-how to attempt to beat the system. On Breeders Cup day he placed a routine bet using a friend's off-track account. Then, after four races had been run, Harn took advantage of his knowledge of when the results were transmitted. Harn went to his office and altered his friend's original bet to give him the first four winners of the Pick Six. Then he 'boxed' the last two races, ensuring a winning ticket regardless of which horses happened to win the last two races. The payoff was an astounding $3 million. Unfortunately for Harn, the payoff was too rich for his own good. The bet was immediately flagged as suspicious because of the odd betting sequence and because too many longshots had won that day. Eventually investigators pried a confession out of Harn and his co-conspirators. They were convicted of fraud.
