Radio Contest Death On January 12, 2007, Jennifer Strange, a 28-year-old mother of three from Rancho Cordova, California pictured in the photo below, was found dead in her home by her mother. It was only a few hours after she had tried to win a Nintendo Wii game console on a radio contest. KDND 107.9 FM's Hold Your Wee for a Wii contest involved drinking large quantities of water without urinating. The cause of Strange's death was determined to be a rare condition known as water intoxication--basically when too much water is consumed by a human being. Civil charges against the radio station were filed by Jennifer's family. They were eventually awarded $16.5 million in the ensuing wrongful death lawsuit. Everyone connected with the contest was fired from KDND. Oh, yeah...Strange did not win the contest.

GM CARS FOR 1958 Here's a breathless, big budget TV commercial for the 1958 range of shiny, huge, General Motors cars, broadcast on NBC. Could a vocal chorus sing any louder, bigger, higher??

Silent Film Night Before Christmas TOM EDISON This is for the real old timers.I went to his museum in West Orange N.J. in the early 60's and one of his actual former employees gave the tour! It's one thing I want to revisit. I actually heard Mary Had A Little Lamb. The 1st recording played back; with Edisons voice which led to the 1st phonograph. The museum is now run by the U.S.National Park System.

Roberto Duran Quits Versus Ray Leonard 1980 November 25, 1980 saw one of the strangest occurrences in boxing history: Roberto Duran quit during the eighth round of his world welterweight title defense versus Sugar Ray Leonard. The surrender was all the more strange because of Duran's macho reputation.

Corny but Classic Morey Amsterdam A clip from the late 40's TV series, 'The Morey Amsterdam Show', also featuring a young Art Carney. This scene features some then-topical jokes about late 40's TV. 'The Morey Amsterdam Show' was a sitcom/variety show that aired on the DuMont Television Network. The show ran from 1948-1950, and almost every episode is preserved at UCLA. This is quite lucky, since very little TV programming from the 40's still exists, and little DuMont Network programming still exists. The DuMont Television Network broadcasted from 1946-1956, and is largely forgotten. Some popular DuMont TV programs included 'Captain Video and His Video Rangers', 'Life is Worth Living', 'Rocky King Detective', 'Cavalcade of Stars' and 'The Plainclothesman'. It's believed that some time after DuMont went out of business, Its archive was dumped into an upper NY bay. Still, Some DuMont broadcasts still exist, including over 200 kinescopes at UCLA, and more at the Museum of Television and Radio.
