Vinnie Barbarino Dance - Gold Jump Suit Many years ago I posted a clip of John Travolta doing his amusing Vinnie Barbarino song and dance on Welcome Back, Kotter. Here's another version--perhaps a better one. It's from the 20th episode (titled The Telethon) where the Sweathogs put on a telethon to try to raise enough money to keep their school's special ed program afloat.

Whitney Houston Live I Will Always Love You An awesome performance of "I Will Always Love You", (from the 1992 film The Bodyguard with Kevin Costner) at Divas 1999. Whitney Houston was one of a few black artists to receive heavy rotation on MTV in the 1980's during a male rock dominated time, in the network's early years. AOL Black Voices said "Though her success seemed like a lightening rod, it was always validated by Whitney's polished and powerful vocal abilities - making her known as "The Voice". After marrying R&B singer Bobby Brown at the height of her career, rumors of drug and spousal abuse led to a decline in her album sales and her public image. Her personal troubles were talked about more than any of her music, and she regularly appeared in the tabloid press. Houston began looking and sounding less like the singer people came to know and she stopped making public appearances. She underwent two drug rehab programs in 2005 and 2006. After a successful second program in 2006, she divorced Bobby Brown and gained custody of their daughter, Bobbi Kristina. She has since been working on her 7th studio album with music mogul and close friend and mentor Clive Davis.

The Jokers Wild I always liked this game show. The Joker's Wild was a popular program that ran on CBS from 1972 through 1975 and in syndication from 1976 through 1986. It is notable for the return to television of host Jack Barry who left TV after the scandal on his 1950s game show Twenty-One. After Barry died in May 1984 he was replaced as host by Bill Cullen. This clip is from a 1979 show. What a quick game!

Old Tandy 100 Ad The Tandy 100 was actually a computer made in Japan by Kyocera. All the ROM programs were written by Microsoft, and even a few of them were written by Bill Gates himself! These programs included a text editor, a telecommunication program, which used the built-in modem (300 baud), and a rather good version of BASIC...no big surprise there.

VJ Day Smoochers This famous photo was taken by Life Magazine photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt during the impromptu VJ Day celebrations in New York City's Times Square. For years no one knew who the two anonymous smoochers were. In 1980 Edith Shain came forward, claiming to be the nurse. When the 50th anniversary approached, Carl Muscarello declared himself to be the sailor. The two kissers got together once again in 1995 to recreate their famous pose on Tom Snyder's television program.

A Charlie Brown Christmas This special aired on CBS from its debut in 1965 through 1999, and has aired on ABC since 2000. At one time it was shown only once a year, but like several other beloved holiday specials such as How the Grinch Stole Christmas, it is now shown several times between Thanksgiving and Christmas. When it was first broadcast, a full 50% of the televisions in the United States were tuned in. A Charlie Brown Christmas won an Emmy and a Peabody award, and is considered by many to be a timeless holiday classic.

1931 World Series Program This attractive baseball program is from the 1931 World Series. That Fall Classic was a rematch of the 1930 World Series. It pitted the Philadelphia Athletics versus the St. Louis Cardinals. The A's had won the World Series in 1929 and 1930, but the Cards took the '31 tilt in seven games. According to the hand-written notation, this program is from Game Five which was played on October 7 at Philadelphia's Shibe Park. The Cardinals only had one major lineup change from 1930: a 27-year-old rookie outfielder named Pepper Martin. Had there been a World Series MVP award in 1931, Martin would have won it. He led the Cards in several offensive categories--including stolen bases. Martin also made a crucial running catch to snuff out a ninth-inning Philadelphia rally in Game Seven. This was the last World Series appearance by the Philadelphia A's. The next time the Athletics appeared in a World Series was in 1972 when they were the Oakland A's.

Camel News Caravan Now this is pretty strange. Camel News Caravan was the first regular television news program in the United States, running from 1949 to 1956. And, as this clip from Granada's 1985 documentary series 'Television' shows, they had their own unique way of presenting stories they had no footage for.
