One of the weirder phenomena of the 1920s was the popularity of flagpole-sitting, a strange publicity gimmick mastered by Alvin (Shipwreck) Kelly. In 1924 Kelly was hired by a Hollywood press agent to promote a new film by sitting on the flagpole above the Los Angeles theater where the movie was playing. He remained there for 13 hours and 13 days, starting a bizarre national craze. By 1928 Kelly was earning over $100 per day for his stunts--fantastic money in those days. The apex of Kelly's career occurred in 1930 when he spent 1,177 hours atop a 125-foot flagpole at Atlantic City's Steel Pier. The Great Depression, however, diminsihed the public's appetite for such stunts. By the end of 1930 Kelly's stunts were earning him little more than pocket change. His last public appearance of any significance occurred in 1939. Broke and on welfare, Kelly dropped dead in 1952 while walking between two parked cars in New York City. Clutched tightly in one arm was a scrapbook containing clippings and momentos from his glory days as King of the Flagpole Sitters.

This is painful to watch. In 1996 Polish heavyweight boxer Andrew Golota was on his way to the big time. He was convincingly beating former champ Riddick Bowe when he repeatedly hit Bowe with low blows and was diqualified. A few months later the two met in a rematch. The same thing couldn't happen again, could it? Hey, that's why boxing writers dubbed Golota 'The Foul Pole!'

Loosely based on the life of attorney Harold Krents, the plot revolves around a Manhattan blind man whose controlling mother disapproves of his relationship with a free-spirited hippie. The title was inspired by a passage in Charles Dickens' BLEAK HOUSE: "I only ask to be free. The butterflies are free. Mankind will surely not deny to Harold Skimpole what it concedes to the butterflies." This is a poor quatlity clip . . sorry
TRIVIA: Heckart won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, and Albert received a Golden Globe as Most Promising Male Newcomer

Here's a minute of film from the 1908 Olympics in London. The opening clip shows the famous finish to the marathon: Italy's Dorando Pietri staggering into the stadium, collapsing, and being assisted across the finsh line. (Pietri was properly disqualified.) You have to love the pole vaulter landing on his feet in the sand. There were no sissy landing mats in 1908!

Huddie Ledbetter aka Lead Belly spent a good many years in prison and also known as a man who literally sang his way out of it. Lead Belly has had a lot of his music covered by such notables as, The Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, Rod Stewart, The Doors and many, many more artist. But one of his songs, Gallis Pole was covered by none other than Led Zeppelin and renamed it, "Gallows Pole"
Lead Belly most noted for playing the 12 string.
This song, Pick a Bale of Cotton, was also covered by ABBA. Also this video has had color added to it for better visual.

The original source for Led Zeppelin's "Gallows Pole" was Leadbelly's "Gallis Pole." "Gallows Pole" on Led Zeppelin III is listed as "Traditional." On some of Leadbelly's recordings, however, songwriting credit is given to Leadbelly and John and Alan Lomax. Alan Lomax, along with his father John, were instrumental in popularizing a wide range of American folk music. Beginning in the 1930s, Alan Lomax produced a great volume of field recordings of folk musicians, focusing in particular on the American South. John and Alan Lomax first recorded Leadbelly while he was in prison and they brought him to national attention. Leadbelly was a master of many styles of music, wrote many songs and adapted many tunes that he had heard over the years. Jimmy Page said that he had heard a version of this song by an obscure folk artist named Fred Gerlach. Where Leadbelly and Fred Gerlach had each played "Gallis Pole" in a 12-string guitar, Led Zeppelin's recording features John Paul Jones on Mandolin and Jimmy Page on Banjo.
