First Issue of Playboy Magazine The first issue, published in December 1953, did not carry a date, as Hefner was unsure whether there would be a second issue. It was produced in Hefner's Hyde Park kitchen. The first centerfold was Marilyn Monroe, although the picture used had originally been taken for a calendar, rather than for Playboy. The first issue was an immediate sensation; it sold out within a matter of weeks. The cover price was 50. Copies of the first issue in Mint to Near Mint condition sold for over $5,000 in 2002.

ETTA JAMES AT LAST 2007 Etta James taped live at the Playboy Jazz Fest 2007. She was born Jamesetta Hawkins on January 25, 1938, and became an American blues, soul, R&B, and jazz singer and songwriter. In the 1950s and 60s, she had her biggest success as a blues and R&B singer. She is best known for her 1961 ballad "At Last", which has been classified as a "timeless classic" and has been featured in many movies and television commercials since its release. She's now sixty-nine and can still belt out a song better than most.

Deborah Harry Today She looks great at 63! Deborah was born in Miami Fl in 1945 and was adopted when she was three months old by a family from Hawthorne, New Jersey, and attended Hawthorne High School, where she graduated in 1963. Prior to starting her singing career she moved to New York in the late 60's and worked as a secretary at the BBC Radio New York office for one year. Later, she was a waitress, a dancer in Union City, and a Playboy Bunny. She began her musical career with a folk rock group, the Wind in the Willows. Harry then joined a girl-group trio, The Stilettos, in the early 1970s. The Stilettos' backup band included her eventual boyfriend and Blondie guitarist, Chris Stein. Harry and Stein formed the band Blondie in the mid-1970s, naming it for the wolf whistle men who often yelled at Harry from passing cars. Blondie quickly became regulars at Max's Kansas City and CBGB's in New York City. After a debut album in 1976, commercial success followed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, first in Australia and Europe, then in the United States.

The Ring Magazine I enjoy collecting sports memorabilia. I have a large collection of The Ring Magazine, the self-proclaimed Bible of Boxing. I especially love the magazine covers from the 1940s and early 1950s. They were terrific works of art--especially those created by C. R. Scharre! Check out this cover from the December 1952 issue featuring new heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano and former champ Jack Dempsey. Founded in 1922, The Ring Magazine is apparently the fourth most collected magazine in America (behind National Geographic, Playboy, and Life).

It Happened One Night Walls of Jericho One of the great pictures of the early takies era was It Happened One Night (1934) starring Clark Gable and Claudette Colbert. Colbert plays a spoiled heiress who runs away from her domineering father to marry her playboy fiance. Gable plays a reporter who finds her. He arranges to help her in return for an exclusive story. This scene finds the two strangers sharing a motel cabin. Gable establishes his quaint version of the 'Walls of Jericho' to keep their arrangement platonic.

1974 Tennis Romance Jimmy Connors and Chris Evert each won singles titles at Wimbledon in 1974. They were also engaged to be married. Their engagement was terminated by the end of the year. All-American girl Chris has been married three times. Rebellious Jimmy has been married since 1980 to wife number one--a former Playboy model. Go figure.

Petticoat Junction Girls Late 1990s Steve wanted to know what the three Bradley girls from Petticoat Junction looked like today. Here's a photo of Meredith MacRae, Linda Henning and Lori Saunders. I'd date this photo around 1997. MacRae, the third actress to play Billie Jo Bradley, died of brain cancer in 2000. The first Billie Jo (Jeannine Riley) was axed from the show after she posed for Playboy. The second Billie Jo (Gunilla Hutton) was allegedly Nat King Cole's mistress. She was later a regular on Hee Haw. Lori Saunders was the second actress to portray Bobbie Jo. The first was Pat Woodell. I don't know why that cast change was made.
