Patrick Swayze Says His Goodbyes Actor Patrick Swayze has reportedly started saying goodbye to family and friends after learning his cancer has spread to his liver. The Dirty Dancing and Ghost star, who in January was told he had pancreatic cancer, has started preparing himself for death, reports say "Patrick recently got word that the cancer had spread to his liver and that is what his doctors said would begin the countdown to the end," a source told National Enquirer magazine. "Patrick knew it was coming because he was suffering increased weakness. "At times, he was so weak that he could barely walk without feeling faint. Sometimes he feels out of breath and has to sit down." Swayze, 56, told Lisa, his wife of 33 years, and his brother Donny that he doesn't have long to live. "Lisa phoned Donny in Los Angeles and told him he need to come to Chicago, where Patrick has been filming TV show The Beast. She was crying and scared Donny to death," the source told National Enquirer. "Donny got the impression his brother was already on his deathbed because Lisa was saying Patrick wanted to say goodbye. She couldn't stop crying." Swayze has been undergoing pioneering Cyberknife radiotherapy at California's Stanford University Medical Centre, and had been making a steady recovery from the illness. He has finished filming The Beast in Chicago, where he has been putting in 12-hour days. He went to a party earlier this week to celebrate with Lisa and Donny. He stayed for one-and-a-quarter hours sitting on a couch the entire time, happily talking to people. Swayze's wife "mingled a little more than Patrick did, leaving the couch to grab a drink or talk to people, but mostly she remained at his side" a source told the US magazine. "Patrick let the party-goers come to him, never circulating around the room and rarely even standing up, but when others did come to him, he chatted at length with many of them." In October, his production team reported Swayze had missed only a day and a half of work. "I'm still fine to work, I haven't changed - oh, I have changed, what am I saying? It's a battle zone I go through. Chemo, no matter how you cut it, is hell on wheels," he told The New York Times.

Jerry Lee Lewis Marriage Scandal Jerry Lee Lewis was one of early rock-and-roll's pioneers and leading performers. In December 1957, when he was 22 years old, Lewis secretly married for the third time. The bride was Myra Gale Brown--who happened to be just 13 years and five months old. Myra's father was Lewis' cousin, J.W. Brown, a member of Lewis' band. News of the strange marriage did not surface until May 1958 when a British journalist uncovered the story as Lewis was beginning a tour of England. The adverse publicity caused the tour to be cancelled after just three concerts. The backlash followed Lewis to the United States. Many radio stations refused to play Lewis' songs. Lewis went from $10,000-per-night engagements to small-time bookings where he was lucky to pick up $250. Moralists declared the scandal was proof of rock-and-roll's inherent evil. The couple stayed married until 1970. Today Brown is a real estate agent.

Foster Hewitt Canada's first pioneer sports broadcaster was diminutive Foster Hewitt. His first hockey broadcast was an amateur game between Toronto and Kitchener in 1923--which he did from the penalty box. He became the voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs on Hockey Night In Canada when its radio broadcasts began in 1931. For the next 40 years Hewitt's familiar voice was the most famous in Canada. He regularly began his broadcasts with the phrase, 'Hello, Canada...and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland.' Hewitt smoothly made the transition to television in 1952--and his TV broadcasts were still simulcast on radio until 1963. That year his son Bill took over the TV broadcasts; Foster continued hockey broadcasts on the radio until 1970. Hewitt was lured out of retirement to call the historic Canada-Russia series in 1972. He was given the Order of Canada that same year. Hewitt died in 1985 at the age of 82.

Jack Lalanne Passes Today At Age 96 Jack LaLanne, the fitness guru and tireless television exercise-show host who demonstrated jumping jacks and push-ups while touting low-sugar diets and weight training long before they were fashionable, has died. He was 96. LaLanne died of pneumonia today at his home in Morro Bay, California, the Associated Press reported, citing his agent, Rick Hersh. LaLanne, who sometimes referred to himself as the Godfather of Fitness, was a TV pioneer in 1951 when he hosted one of the first exercise programs. His following grew when “The Jack LaLanne Show” was syndicated nationally from 1956 to 1970. The muscular host demonstrated calisthenics while amusing the home audience with his patter: “Ten seconds on the lips and a lifetime on the hips” and “Your waistline is your lifeline.”

Confidential Magazine Confidential was a periodical published quarterly from December 1952 to August 1953, and then bi-monthly until 1978. It was founded by Robert Harrison and is considered a pioneer in scandal, gossip, and exposé journalism. Newsweek said Confidential focused on 'sin and sex with a seasoning of right wing politics.' Its journalism consisted of equal parts of innuendo and exposés. For example, the magazine alleged that Bing Crosby was a wife beater and that Rock Hudson and Liberace were homosexuals (It referred to them as 'Lavender Lads.'). It also revealed that Robert Mitchum had been charged with smoking marijuana. Apart from spreading gossip and outing homosexuals, Confidential combined its exposés with a conservative agenda especially targeted at those who sympathised with the political left and at celebrities that it claimed were engaged in 'miscegenation.' Humphrey Bogart described the publication's popularity: 'Everybody reads it--but they say the cook brought it into the house.' Comedian Groucho Marx once wrote to Confidential's editor, 'If you don't stop writing nasty things about me, I'll be forced to cancel my subscription.'

Annette Kellermann - First Swimsuit Model Australia's Annette Kellermann had weak legs as a child, so her doctor prescribed a rigorous regimen of swimming exercises to strengthen them. The advice worked wonders. By age 13 in 1900, she was a local swimming champion, having mastered numerous strokes. Kellermann found the pantaloon-type female bathing suits of the era ridiculously restrictive, however, so she designed her own form-fitting one-piece swimsuits (as pictured here). They were both revolutionary and scandalous. In 1908 a Harvard doctor declared Kellerman to be "the perfect woman". Her fame opened up many doors to her. The shapely Kellermann became a silent movie star; in 1916's A Daughter of the Gods she became the first actress in American movie history to do a nude scene. (Her long hair covered most of her body, however.) She also continued advocating the healthful benefits of swimming in books and magazines. She even penned children's books. Kellermann is also credited with being a pioneer in the field of synchronized swimming. She died in 1975 at the age of 88.
