Turnabout - 1979 Sitcom Flop Here is the opening montage to Turnabout--an NBC sitcom that lasted just seven episodes in the early months of 1979. Starring John Schuck and Sharon Gless, the premise of the show was that a happily married couple, Sam and Penny Alston, secretly envy each other's life. (Sam was a sportswriter and Penny was a big wheel with a cosmetics company.) Because of their collective wish--and helped along by a magic statue--one morning they wake up and find themselves having acquired the other's personality and interests. The viewing public never took a liking to the Alstons. Turnabout debuted on January 26, 1979 and was off the air by March 30, 1979.

Cheers - Final Scene On May 20, 1993--after 11 excellent seasons--the terrific sitcom Cheers went off the air. The plot of the final show reunited the intellectual Diane Chambers and the unrefined Sam Malone after six years of separation. The two were supposed to marry (for the umpteenth time) but Sam calls off the wedding at the last minute and returns to his comfort zone--his beloved bar. Barfly Norm cryptically tells him he cannot be unfaithful to his one true love, but Sam (never the brightest penny in the jar) doesn't quite make the connection.

Great Britain Adopts Decimal Currency - 1971 Although the idea had been discussed in the British parliament as early as 1824, it was not until Monday, February 15, 1971 that Great Britain finally adopted decimal currency (100 pence to the pound) and shelved the cumbersome monetary system of 240 pence to the pound that had thoroughly confused foreigners. Prior to Decimal Day, there were 12 pennies in a shilling and 20 shillings to a pound. There were also lesser denominations of coins. For example, a farthing was worth a quarter of a penny. Then there were the weird coins such as the half crown which was worth two shillings and sixpence--or 30 pence--or one-eighth of a pound. British banks shut down on Wednesday, February 10, 1971 at 3 p.m. in order to have nearly five days to convert all their accounts from old money to new money. (As few banks were computerized in 1971, most of the recalculations had to be done manually.) In the months leading up to Decimal Day, the British government produced a wide array of pamphlets designed to educate the public about the 'new money.' There were even songs produced for the same purpose. Typically, older Brits were mostly against the change and had the most difficulty adapting to it.

Good Heavens - Failed 1976 Sitcom Does anyone remember this short-lived sitcom from the spring of 1976? Good Heavens starred Carl Reiner as Mr. Angel--a visitor from the hereafter who descends to earth to answer wishes and do good deeds for deserving people. Reiner was the show's only recurring character. Guest stars included Susan Dey, Florence Henderson, Penny Marshall, Alex Karras and Don Ameche. Only 13 episodes aired sporadically on ABC from February to June 1976. Here is the show's intro. Don't blink: It runs for a mere 17 seconds.
