The first issue, published in December 1953, did not carry a date, as Hefner was unsure whether there would be a second issue. It was produced in Hefner's Hyde Park kitchen. The first centerfold was Marilyn Monroe, although the picture used had originally been taken for a calendar, rather than for Playboy. The first issue was an immediate sensation; it sold out within a matter of weeks. The cover price was 50¢. Copies of the first issue in Mint to Near Mint condition sold for over $5,000 in 2002.

"Every Woman in the World"
The duo of Graham Russell and Russell Hitchcock met in May of 1975 while performing in the Australian production of the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical, Jesus Christ Superstar. Their 1980 album, Lost in Love, contained three U.S. Top Five singles, including the title track, plus "Every Woman In The World" and "All Out of Love" (sample). The album sold two million copies in the U.S. The following year they released "The One That You Love" and the title song was released as a single and went number #1 on the Billboard Singles Chart. It also featured two other Top 10 hits, "Here I Am" and "Sweet Dreams". Their third album, in 1982, "Now & Forever", continued the group's popularity with the Top 10 hit, "Even The Nights Are Better" and two top 40 singles "Young Love" and "Two Less Lonely People In The World". However, Air Supply wasn't finished yet. In spite of the somewhat declining popularity of "Now & Forever" compared with previous releases, the next year would prove very big for the band. in 1983, they released their "Greatest Hits" album with a new single called
"Making Love Out Of Nothing At All" written by Jim Steinman. The song was one of their biggest hits ever spending three weeks at number 2 and the album eventually sold 5 million copies. Air Supply released their first live video, Air Supply Live in Hawaii. In 1985, they had one semi-major Billboard hit with "Just as I Am" and a couple of very minor hits. Russell and Hitchcock recorded a 1987 Christmas album before taking a break from studio recordings. During this time, Russell Hitchcock released his self-titled in 1988 which was not a big seller. However, he did have the single "Swear To Your Heart" in 1990 from the movie soundtrack for "Arachnophobia" which received a lot of airplay.

When the Beatles announced their break up in the winter of 1970, CCR became the most successful band and the biggest singles act in the world, despite never landing a #1 single. Always very private, the group never became stars personally to befit their status on the pop charts. They sought to change that with the release of Pendulum. Before the album's release, they had a fan type book written. Called "Inside Creedence", the book took about six weeks from the time it was conceived until it was actually published, coincidental with the release of Pendulum. In fact, many copies of the book were sold packaged with the record. The band also made a television special and had a $30,000 press junket to ballyhoo the album. The record shipped a million copies. Frederick Anthony Picariello, or as he was known to us, Freddy Cannon, was born in Boston in 1940. When he was very young he learned to play a guitar and in high school he formed his own band. As a vocalist, he copied the style of Little Richard. He eventually signed with Swan Records in Philadelphia, a recording studio in which master music promoter Dick Clark had an interest, and who brought him national exposure through numerous appearances on American Bandstand. In 1959 he changed his name to Freddy Cannon, and was dubbed "Boom Boom" because of his thundering musical renditions, he had three Top 10 hits. Freddy also played himself in the final episode of a teen soap opera called Never Too Young in 1966. He now lives in Tarzana, California, and at 67, still continues to perform in concert. I still remember listening to his songs on a little GE transistor radio...those were the days huh?

This became a Christmas classic after it was first released in 1957, and has received frequent airplay every Christmas since then. It has gone on to sell 100 million copies. This version was re-recorded by him in 1965 and yet again in 1967 on different labels. Then in 1970 he recorded an entire album titled 'Jingle Bell Rock". In 1983 he was back in the recording studio and released his last recording of this song on the Black Rose label.

Eddy Arnold, whose mellow baritone on songs like 'Make the World Go Away', made him one of the most successful country singers in history, died this morning May 6,2008, days short of his 90th birthday. Arnold died at a care facility near Nashville. His wife of 66 years, Sally, had died in March, and in the same month, Arnold fell outside his home, injuring his hip. Arnold's vocals on songs like the 1965 "Make the World Go Away," one of his many No. 1 country hits and a top 10 hit on the pop charts, made him one of the most successful country singers in history. Folksy yet sophisticated, he became a pioneer of "The Nashville Sound," also called "countrypolitan," a mixture of country and pop styles. His crossover success paved the way for later singers such as Kenny Rogers.
"I sing a little country, I sing a little pop and I sing a little folk, and it all goes together," he said in 1970. He was elected to the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1966. The following year he was the first person to receive the entertainer of the year award from the Country Music Association.
The reference book "Top Country Singles 1944-1993," ranked Arnold the No. 1 country singer in terms of overall success on the Billboard country charts. It lists his first No. 1 hit as "It's a Sin," 1947, and for the following year ranks his "Bouquet of Roses" as the biggest hit of the entire year. Other hits included "Cattle Call,""The Last Word in Lonesome Is Me,""Anytime,""Bouquet of Roses,""What's He Doing in My World?""I Want to Go With You,""Somebody Like Me,""Lonely Again" and "Turn the World Around." Most of his hits were done in association with famed guitarist Chet Atkins, the producer on most of the recording sessions. The late Dinah Shore once described his voice as like "warm butter and syrup being poured over wonderful buttermilk pancakes." Reflecting on his career, he said he never copied anyone. 'I really had an idea about how I wanted to sing from the very beginning,' he said. He revitalized his career in the 1960s by adding strings, a controversial move for a country artist back then.
'I got to thinking, if I just took the same kind of songs I'd been singing and added violins to them, I'd have a new sound. They cussed me, but the disc jockeys grabbed it. ... The artists began to say, 'Aww, he's left us.' Then within a year, they were doing it!' Arnold was born May 15, 1918, on a farm near Henderson, Tenn., the son of a sharecropper. He sang on radio stations in Jackson, Tenn., Memphis, Tenn., and St. Louis before becoming nationally known. His image was always that of a modest, clean-cut country boy. 'You cannot satisfy all the people,' he once said. 'They have an image of me. Some people think I'm Billy Graham's half brother, but I'm not. I want people to get this hero thing off their mind and just let me be me.'

Life, the magazine that turned photo-journalism into an artform, ceased publication in 1972. It had been a weekly 'general audience' magazine since 1936. A staple at newsstands, at one point it sold more than 13 million copies per week. By 1969, with general-interest magazines losing popularity, Life was no longer profitable. The December 29, 1972 year-in-review issue marked the end of Life. The word 'goodbye' appeared on the back cover.

San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Flowers in Your Hair)" is a song, written by John Phillips of The Mamas & the Papas, and sung by Scott McKenzie. It was released in June 1967 (the Summer of Love), and became a cultural icon of the 1960s counterculture of Haight-Ashbury, San Francisco.
McKenzie's song, penned by Phillips to promote the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival, became an instant hit, and became the anthem of the hippie era. The song's lyrics tell the listeners, "If you're going to San Francisco, be sure to wear some flowers in your hair". Due to the difference between the lyrics and the actual title, the title is often quoted as "San Francisco (Be Sure to Wear Some Flowers in Your Hair)". "San Francisco" reached number four on the Billboard Hot 100 in the U.S., and was number one in the UK and most of Europe. The single is purported to have sold over 5 million copies worldwide. The song is credited with bringing thousands of young people to San Francisco, California during the late 1960s.

In 1972,this international star rose after his self-penned ballad, "Alone Again (Naturally)", a No. 3 hit in Britain, became a chart-topper in the U.S., spending six weeks at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and selling nearly two million copies there.
