Gorgeous George Pro wrestling's first superstar was George Wagner, better known in the world of grappling thespians as Gorgeous George. His shtick was designed to outrage conservative-minded Americans of the 1950s. George was quick to realize it didn't matter if the patrons bought tickets to cheer him or jeer him--as long as they bought tickets. With Pomp and Circumstance as his entrance music, George would often climb into the ring clad in effeminate robes, his long hair pinned back with gold bobby pins. His valet would spray George's corner with perfume and his opponent with disinfectant. Gorgeous George was a TV icon in the early 1950s. His appearances on the tube often scored higher ratings than Milton Berle. Muhammad Ali cited Gorgeous George as the inspiration for his braggadocio. George retired from wrestling in November 1962. He died of a heart attack just 13 months year later, on December 26, 1963. He was only 48 years old.

Anna Taylor Niagara Falls Daredevil On October 24, 1901, Anna Edson Taylor became the first person to plunge over Niagara Falls in a barrel and live to tell about it. The 43-year-old school teacher from Bay City, Michigan had no credentials as a daredevil. Anna could not even swim! She dreamed up the scheme merely as a money-making ploy. She rode in a 160-pound oak barrel. It was only 4-1/2 feet long and just 4 feet in diameter at its widest point. The barrel contained a 100-pound anvil that served as ballast to keep it upright in the water. A crude pump supplied Anna with air. Cushions fastened with leather straps were intended to keep Anna from getting hurt. Seven iron hoops were all that held the barrel together. The stunt was well publicized and several thousand people were on hand to view the event. They watched the barrel descend down the 167-foot waterfall. (It took three seconds.) It remained submerged at the bottom for another 10 seconds. When the barrel was hauled out of the water, Anna emerged bruised and bleeding from a slight cut behind her right ear. She was babbling incoherently for a few moments, but she had survived. Anna attempted to cash in on her achievement with public speaking engagements. However, from all accounts, she spoke in a boring, emotionless, raspy monotone that put audiences to sleep. Furthermore, she stupidly got rid of the barrel--a rather important prop that would have added immensely to her dull lecture. For years afterwards Anna eked out a meager living selling autographs in Niagara Falls beside a facsimile barrel. She died in 1921.

Donna Douglas in 2007 Babs64 wanted to know what Donna Douglas (Elly Mae Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies) was up to today. Well, brace yourself, Babs, here she is! This unflattering photo of her was taken at a 2007 parade in Tennessee where she was the grand marshal. Donna Douglas is 74 years old. Twice divorced, she lives in Baton Rouge and keeps herself occupied by working for various Christian children's charities. She also makes many public appearances dressed as Elly Mae Clampett. (Geez, I hope that's a wig she's wearing.)

Irene Ryan Since we're on a bit of a Beverly Hillbillies kick, here's a picture of Irene Ryan (Granny Clampett) from her heyday. She looked older than she really was. She died in 1973--two years after the show was cancelled. She was only 70 years old!

Twiggy The scrawny modern supermodel originated with Twiggy, a British model, in 1967. Her real name was Lesley Hornby. She weighed just 90 pounds and had measurements of 31-23-32. Her 27-year-old boyfriend/manager, Nigel Davies, skilfully packaged Hornby as Twiggy, and within months she became the world's top fashion model, appearing in Vogue and Elle magazines before taking New York by storm. Twiggy's cropped haircut (shorter than most boys wore at the time) made her something of an androgynous figure. Her trademark was to paint eyelashes on her lower lids. These became known as Twiggies. Over the years, Twiggy's exceedingly slim figure was blamed for the rise in anorexia cases. Depite her fame, Twiggy remained humble and true to her East London roots. She once told Life Magazine, 'I know I'm not beautiful or glam. But with me funny face, me funny skirts, and me funny accent, somehow it combined to work out just lovely.'

Honus Wagner baseball card The most valuable sports card in the world features Pittsburgh Pirates shortstop Honus Wagner. Printed by the American Tobacco Company in 1910, the card is quite rare. Only about 60 are known to exist. Their scarcity can be attributed to Wagner himself. A non-smoker, Wagner objected to his likeness being used to promote tobacco. The company acquiesced to Wagner's wishes and withdrew the card from production--but not before a number had entered the market. The most splendid example of the Wagner Card sold at auction in February 2007 for $2.35 million.

Shirley Bassey What a Powerful Voice Here is an outstanding 1998 performance of one of Shirley's signature songs, "Goldfinger" All of her performances are great, but this one is exceptional. At 61, Shirley's pitch and vocal power were right on the mark!! She has sold over 135 million records in her 55 years as a recording artist. In recognition of her career longevity, endurance and a particular admiration from the Royal Family, Bassey was created a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire on Dec 31, 1999 by HM Queen Elizabeth II.

Gordon Sinclair The Americans On June 5, 1973, Canadian radio personality Gordon Sinclair delivered this stirring, pro-American editorial. He had written it in 20 minutes. Simply titled The Americans, it followed his noontime newscast on CFRB in Toronto. The response was overwhelmingly positive. Radio stations in Buffalo, New York asked permission to play the broadcast, which was granted. Soon afterwards it swept across the United States. Sinclair's verbatim editorial was made into this recording (with the Battle Hymn of the Republic playing in the background). It reached #23 on the Billboard charts, making the 73-year-old Sinclair the oldest living person to have a Billboard top 40 hit! At Sinclair's request, the proceeds from its sales went entirely to the American Red Cross. When President Ronald Reagan made his first official visit to Canada in 1981, he asked to meet Sinclair. Reagan told Sinclair that his editorial always cheered him up when he was feeling down.
