Come Go With Me Remember the Del Vikings? They were noted for being one of the few racially integrated musical groups to attain success in the 1950's. The group was formed in 1955 by Clarence E. Quick, Kripp Johnson, Don Jackson, Samuel Paterson, and Bernard Robertson, who were all enlisted in the USAF and stationed in Pittsburgh PA. Because all of the members were in the service, they constantly ran the risk of being disrupted by members being stationed in other places. This happened soon after the group's forming when Paterson and Robertson were sent to Germany. They were replaced by baritone David Lerchey, the group's first white member, and tenor Norman Wright. Originally signed to Fee Bee Records (1957), their first hit came in 1957, with the Wright-led 'Come Go with Me'. Soon after, Jackson was out, and was replaced by Gus Backus, the group's second white member. The group quickly found itself in greater demand following the release of 'Come Go with Me', which propelled the group into the Top 10 on Billboard's Top 100. They split up in 1965, but were back in 1970 with a near original lineup, Clarence Quick, Kripp Johnson, Norman Wright, Dave Lerchey, and William Blakely. Although a couple of members died over the years, the Del Vikings were featured on the PBS special KPBS Doo Wop Show in 1999, which is when this performance was filmed.

Mabel Normand Mabel Normand was probably the most successful comedienne of the silent screen era. Nobody know exactly when she was born. Sources list 1892, 1893, and 1895 as possible years for Mabel's birth. She started to appear in movies in 1909 and was one of Mack Sennett's bathing beauties. By 1913 Mabel was writing, directing, and starring in films. Like any good movie star, Mabel was involved in a few scandals. Sadly she died of tuberculosis in 1930 and is only well known to silent films buffs today.

Glenn Miller Disappearance Renowned band leader Glenn Miller's disappearance in 1944 has led to some interesting speculation. On December 15, 1944, Miller, a major in the U.S. Army, and two other military personnel departed from an RAF base in England in a small aircraft bound for Paris. Miller was scheduled to meet with his band and begin a concert tour for U.S troops in recently liberated areas of France. Miller's airplane never arrived. No wreckage nor any bodies were ever found. The prevailing wisdom is that bad weather over the English Channel caused the plane to crash into the sea killing all aboard. Two other possibilities have emerged: That same day a squadron of bombers destined for Germany had their mission aborted because of the inclement weather. Unable to return with their payload of explosives, the squadron was ordered to jettison their bombs into the English Channel. Years later one aviator claimed some of the discarded bombs accidentally caused a small aircraft flying below the squadron--which could have been Miller's--to crash into the sea. A more lurid tale claims Miller landed safely in France but died of a heart attack in a Parisian brothel. According to this yarn, Miller's seedy death was covered up by the military for propaganda reasons. This latter rumor circulated during the war and was given new life when the German tabloid Bild reprinted the brothel tale in 1997. Miller biographers consider that story to be sheer nonsense. They rightly ask, 'What became of Flight Officer John Morgan and Lt. Col. Norman F. Baessell (the other two men aboard Miller's plane) who also vanished?'

Bloody Wednesday "Overshadowing September 11, 2001, another September day 139 years earlier remains the bloodiest single day in American history. On September 17, 1862, there were more than twice the number of fatalities that were suffered in the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon . The number of casualties at Antietam was four times greater than American casualties at Normandy. more American soldiers died at Sharspburg (The Confederate name for the battle) than died in combat in all the other wars fought by this country in the nineteenth century combined:" James McPherson, historian This day has come to be remembered as Bloody Wednesday Bloody Wednesday Sharpsburg - September 17, 1862 Photos ..
