Swiss Spaghetti Trees 1957 April 1 In this b&w clip, first broadcast on BBC Panorama on 1st April 1957, a very young Richard Dimbleby revealed the wonderful world of Swiss spaghetti production to millions of deprived and hungry post-war Brits. (did I hear someone say...do it to me one more time???)-The spaghetti tree is a fictitious tree and the subject of a 3-minute spoof report on the Swiss spaghetti harvest beside Lake Lugano broadcast by the BBC current affairs programme Panorama. -The report was first produced as an April Fools' Day joke in 1957, reporting on the bumper spaghetti harvest in Switzerland, resulting from the mild winter and "virtual disappearance of the spaghetti weevil." ... Do You remember that??? I don't remember this, but after seeing this today, My kids will never forget it or what I gave them to plant on this day 2009! Their very own Spaghetti Tree!!

SOPHIA LOREN Still a Sex Symbol at 72 Born Sofia Villani Scicolone, in Rome Italy on September 20, 1934. An illegitimate child from a poor home in Naples, she became a teenage beauty queen and model. Her film debut was as an extra. She came under contract to film producer Carlo Ponti, later her husband, and blossomed as an actress. An international career followed and she won an Oscar for La Ciociara, (1961, translation Two Women). Frequently appearing with Marcello Mastroianni, her many films include The Millionairess (1961) and Marriage Italian Style (1964). In 1979 she published Sophia Loren: Living and Loving (with A E Hotchner) which was filmed for television as Sophia Loren: Her Own Story (1980), in which she played herself and her mother. She received an honorary Academy Award in 1991. How she stays so gorgeous is anyone's guess, but being Sicilian myself, I would be willing to bet there's something in the olive oil, no kidding. In any case, I better get me a few barrels of it lol

FOX News Insults Canadian Military I generally don't post recent clips, but this one needs to be shown. A panel of buffoons on the FOX News 'Redeye' show recently belittled the Canadian military at about the same time four Canadian soldiers were killed in Afghanistan in a roadside ambush. Among the classless things said about the Canadian Armed Forces was a bizarre accusation that they want to take a break from their duties to have 'yoga classes, paint landscapes and wear Capri pants on the beach.' Canadians are more than a little bit miffed by these ignorami. To date 116 Canadians have been killed in the mission in Afghanistan. Here's the story from CBC News.

I Remember Elie Weisel Dedicated to another famous Holocaust survivor, Nazi hunter and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Elie Wiesel was born at Sighet, Maramures county, Romania On September 30, 1928. He is the author of over 40 books, the best known of which is Night, a memoir that describes his experiences during the Holocaust and his imprisonment in several concentration camps. Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. The Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," noting that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps," as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace," Wiesel has delivered a powerful message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity. On November 30, 2006 Wiesel received an honorary knighthood in London, England in recognition of his work toward raising Holocaust education in the United Kingdom. Music "Hatikvah", (Israeli National Anthem) performed by Barbra Streisand. I'm thankful to be able to share this with you.

Swiss spaghetti harvest hoax As an April Fools joke in 1957, the respected BBC program Panorama broadcast this bogus news feature about the springtime spaghetti harvest...in Switzerland. Many people were duped by the prank and contacted the BBC to request more information about spaghetti farming.

Gary US Bonds Quarter to Three This clip may have been from Bandstand, the year was 1961 and the music was wild! We were dong the "Mashed Potato", the "Pony", and the "Twist", and we were having a ball! Gary joined record producer Frank Guida's small Legrand record label and Guida changed his name to U.S. Bonds in hope that it would be confused with a public service announcement advertising the sale of government bonds and in that way get more airplay. Bonds' first hit was the song "New Orleans", which was followed by "Not Me", a flop for Bonds, but later a hit for The Orlons, and then by his only Number One hit, "Quarter To Three" in June 1961. Subsequent hits, under the name Gary U.S. Bonds, included "School Is Out", "Dear Lady Twist" and "Twist, Twist, Senora" in the early 1960s. In a 1963 tour of Europe, he headlined above The Beatles. While Gary U.S. Bonds is mostly known for achievements within rhythm and blues and rock and roll, he often transcends these genres, he has been nominated for the Country Music Association's "Songwriter of the Year distinction. He is also an honoree of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. He was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame on 15 October 2006, and still performs onstage. "Quarter To Three" appears on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.

Stage Door Canteen the movie poster reads, "Through the doors of the most famous canteen in the world pass the armed forces of all the United Nations where they are entertained nightly by the most famous personalities of stage, screen and radio. Here they find laughter, comradeship and gaiety . . . and dance to music by their favorite big-name bands. Here, too, they find romance . . . while a constant panorama of wonderful entertainment unfolds before their happy eyes. STAGE DOOR CANTEEN brings you 48 great stars . . .6 big-name bands. . . and a poignant and indescribably tender story of a soldier's love in wartime . . . where hours must take the place of years." (The real Stage Door Canteen on 44th Street could not be used for the filming as it was too busy receiving real servicemen. It was recreated in New York and at the RKO Studios in Culver City.)

Charlie Chaplin Receives Honorary Oscar 1972 At the 1972 Academy Awards, 83-year-old Charlie Chaplin received a long overdue honorary Oscar for his immense contributions to cinema. The presenter was Daniel Taradash, the president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. It was the first time Chaplin had set foot in the United States since 1952. (Chaplin had never obtained American citizenship and, after a vacation abroad, he was refused admission into the U.S. during the Red Scare era because his political views were thought to be pro-communist. Idiocy!)
