The third and final story from the 1969 pilot of Night Gallery, entitled The Escape Route, starred Richard Kiley, and centered around an escaped Nazi war criminal living in South America and haunted by his past. He begins to visit a museum where he is drawn to a painting of a fisherman on a lake. It's such a peaceful setting, that he becomes obsessed with it and soon begins to see himself as the figure in the boat. He is soon recognized by a survivor of the camps, played by Sam Jaffe. When Israeli agents are about to catch up to him, he flees into the museum, and to the painting, there he begs God to take him into the painting. What he doesn't realize is, the painting has been moved and in it's place is one portraying the brutality of the holocaust. I think with all three stories, Rod was showing us that after all is said and done, there is justice.

Even though most of you may not know who this man was, there are many who do, and who will always think of him with a great deal of honor and respect, I am one of them. Simon Wiesenthal, was a Holocaust survivor who helped track down numerous Nazi war criminals following World War II and spent the later decades of his life fighting anti-Semitism and prejudice against all people. He died on Sept. 20, 2005 at the age of 96. The contribution of this man to history is best described as keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive during the crucial years.
In the 1950s, the US was busy with the Cold War, while Israel had its own troubles with the Arabs. He just took the job. It was a job no one else wanted. He was the only full-time Nazi hunter. A day after World War II ended, Wiesenthal handed over a crumbling list of Nazis to US Army intelligence. He did not want to be a Nazi hunter, he was an architect by profession. However, the Holocaust forced him into action; 89 members of his family were murdered by the Nazis. He couldn't forget, he believed someone had to go after the criminals. In the last couple of years his health deteriorated, but his mind remained clear. Aside from Adolph Eichmann, among the 1,100 Nazi war criminals Wiesenthal helped bring to justice, were the commanders of Treblinka and Sobibor, and also the Nazi who arrested Anne Frank, Karl Silberbauer. More than anyone else in the world, he represented the belief that anti-Semitism and crimes against humanity are not mitigated with passing time, nor are they ever forgiven.

Dedicated to another famous Holocaust survivor, Nazi hunter and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Elie Wiesel was born at Sighet, Maramures county, Romania On September 30, 1928. He is the author of over 40 books, the best known of which is Night, a memoir that describes his experiences during the Holocaust and his imprisonment in several concentration camps.
Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. The Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," noting that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps," as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace," Wiesel has delivered a powerful message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity.
On November 30, 2006 Wiesel received an honorary knighthood in London, England in recognition of his work toward raising Holocaust education in the United Kingdom.

Since Lava has shared his clips of the great Chaplin, I'd like to add one more. First released in October of 1940, The Great Dictator bitterly satirized Nazism and Adolf Hitler, which culminated in an overt political plea to defy fascism. Well before the full extent of the horrors of Nazism had been uncovered, Chaplin's film advanced a stirring, controversial condemnation of Hitler, fascism, and the Nazis, the latter of whom he excoriated in the film as "machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts."
This film was Chaplin's first talkie, and his most commercially successful film.

The character of Ezra Lieberman is thought by many to be modeled on the famous real life Nazi hunter Simon Wiesenthal. Olivier plays a Nazi hunter in this film while in Marathon Man (1976), he played Dr. Christian Szell, an evil Nazi doctor. Szell was known as "The White Angel", whereas Mengele was known as the "Angel of Death".
Both of the lead actors, Gregory Peck and Laurence Olivier, played General Douglas MacArthur in films produced roughly the same time as The Boys From Brazil, Peck in MacArthur (1977) and Olivier in Inchon (1981).
Peck's performance as the evil Mengele contrasts with the heroic roles he was most famous for playing, notably Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird.

In June 1940 German forces occupied virtually all of western Europe. France and Belgium were on the verge of total collapse. The British Expeditionary Force had been evacuated from the beaches of Dunkirk to fight another day. England stood alone against mighty Nazi Germany. Winston Churchill, who had been British prime minister for just a month, broadcast this famous, defiant oration. Listen as one of the great figures of the 20th century delivers probably his most famous speech of the Second World War era. Churchill's 'fight them on the beaches' speech sets the tone of the war for the entire British Empire.

Before 1936, the opening ceremonies for the Olympic Games were generally low-key. However, Nazi Germany turned them into a well choreographed event. All Olympic opening ceremonies since then have been influenced by what took place in Berlin in 1936.

Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was first released in 1937. It was the first animated feature film produced by Walt Disney. It was the first full-length animated feature to become widely successful within the English-speaking world, and the first to be filmed in Technicolor. It made its premiere at the Carthay Circle Theater on December 21, 1937, and was released to theaters by RKO Radio Pictures on February 4, 1938. Walt Disney had to literally fight to get the film produced. Both his brother Roy, and his wife, Lillian, attempted to talk him out of it, and the Hollywood movie industry mockingly referred to the film as 'Disney's Folly' while it was in production. He even had to mortgage his house to help finance the film's production, which eventually ran up a total cost of just over $1.5 million, a whopping sum for a feature film in 1937. It has been well documented that Adolf Hitler watched this film with a room full of children, and was delighted by Disney's adaptation of the German fairy tale. In fact, Hitler offered Disney anything he wanted in exchange for Disney's creation of feature-length animated features in Germany. Though this is the basis for the 'Walt Disney is a Nazi' rumors, Disney's biographer Bob Thomas proved that Disney declined Hitler's invitation, and in fact soon entered production on such anti-German projects as 'Der Fuhrer's Face' and 'Victory Through Air Power'.

The fate of postwar Europe was decided in 1945 at the Soviet Union resort city of Yalta on the Crimean Sea. With Nazi Germany on the verge of defeat, the leaders of the three major Allied combatant nations met to decide the fate of Germany and eastern Europe. Franklin Roosevelt is visibly ill and weary from the long journey. The British Empire is in decline and Winston Churchill can no longer assert any strength. By default Josef Stalin is given free rein to deal with matters in eastern Europe. The Cold War was about to begin.
