Muhammad Ali and Wilt Chamberlain By the middle of 1967 Muhammad Ali had pretty much run out of decent opponents to fight, so there was ridiculous talk of pitting NBA star Wilt Chamberlain against the world heavyweight champ! Howard Cosell brought the two of them together on this episode of ABC's Wide World of Sports.

Muhammad Ali - Gold Medal Replaced For years Muhammad Ali claimed he'd tossed his gold medal from the 1960 Rome Olympics into the Ohio River in a fit of anger after experiencing racial discrimination in his hometown of Louisville, KY. By the early 1990s, Ali admitted the story was a fabrication and that his gold medal had simply been misplaced. This clip is from the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta. IOC head Juan Antonio Samaranch gave Ali a replacement medal in a special ceremony at halftime of the men's basketball final.

George Foreman Regains Title at 45 George Foreman was an intimidating bruiser when he won the world heavyweight title by demolishing Joe Frazier in 1973. He surprisingly lost the crown to Muhammad Ali in Zaire in 1974. By 1977 Foreman was out of boxing and was making a living preaching in Texas. With funds getting a little low, Foreman made what many fans thought was a crazy comeback in 1987 at age 38. Much slower than he had been in his prime, Foreman could still hit with great power, though. Now a fan favorite because of his new likable persona, Foreman had a series of comeback wins. He lost a title try to Evander Holyfield in 1991 at age 42. Three years later he was given another shot against new champion Michael Moorer. Trailing badly on the scorecards entering the tenth round, the 45-year-old Foreman shocked the world with an historic knockout blow, as this clip shows. Listen to Jim Lampley's succinct call: "It happened! It happened!" Also listen to the excited, joyous cheering of the pro-Foreman crowd when Moorer hits the deck. It ranks as one of the magical moments in sports history.

Muhammad Ali on Race -1971 In 1971 Muhammad Ali was interviewed on British television. As usual, as with any Ali interview from that time, the topics of discussion drifted far afield from boxing. This segment delved into racial issues. Be prepared for a shock as Ali bluntly gives his views on the evils of race mixing.

Heavyweight Champ Ken Norton Passes LAS VEGAS (AP) - Former heavyweight champion Ken Norton, who beat Muhammad Ali and later lost a controversial decision to him in Yankee Stadium, died Wednesday at a local care facility. He was 70. Ken Norton Jr., a coach with the Seattle Seahawks, confirmed the death to The Associated Press before handing the phone to his wife, too distraught to talk. Norton, the only heavyweight champion never to win the title in the ring, had been in poor health for the last several years after suffering a series of strokes, a friend of the fighter said. "He's been fighting the battle for two years," said Gene Kilroy, Ali's former business manager. "I'm sure he's in heaven now with all the great fighters. I'd like to hear that conversation."

Sad Final Years of Jerry Quarry Jerry Quarry was an extremely popular heavyweight fighter whose best years unfortunately coincided with the heydays of both Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier. Quarry was a two-fisted slugger who possessed suprising mobility in the ring. A fine overall athlete, Quarry was a finalist in ABC's Superstars in 1974. His popularity landed him cameo appearances on TV shows such as Adam-12, I Dream of Jeannie, and Batman. However, Quarry's long career in the ring--he had about 200 amateur bouts and 66 pro fights--took a heavy toll. In 1983, six years after his last fight, Quarry and two other boxers volunteered to take neurological exams for a Sports Illustrated feature on the harmful effects of boxing. Although Quarry seemed perfectly healthy and alert, his test results were shockingly bad. By the mid 1990s, pugilistic dementia, commonly known "being punch drunk" had set in. This sad feature on Quarry was shot in 1995 when he was just 50 years old. He was under the care of his brother because he was unable to take care of himself anymore. Quarry was hospitalized in late December 1998 with pneumonia and died of cardiac arrest on January 3, 1999. He was just 53 years old.
