Like most boxing fans, Howard Cosell figured 32-year-old Muhammad Ali had no chance to regain the world heavyweight title whe he stepped into the ring to face 25-year-old George Foreman in Zaire in 1974. (Ali won by an eighth-round knockout.) In 1964 Cosell picked Sonny Liston to beat Ali (then Cassius Clay) in one round. Clay won the title that night when Liston failed to come out for the seventh round.

Pro wrestling's first superstar was George Wagner, better known in the world of grappling thespians as Gorgeous George. His shtick was designed to outrage conservative-minded Americans of the 1950s. George was quick to realize it didn't matter if the patrons bought tickets to cheer him or jeer him--as long as they bought tickets. With Pomp and Circumstance as his entrance music, George would often climb into the ring clad in effeminate robes, his long hair pinned back with gold bobby pins. His valet would spray George's corner with perfume and his opponent with disinfectant. Gorgeous George was a TV icon in the early 1950s. His appearances on the tube often scored higher ratings than Milton Berle. Muhammad Ali cited Gorgeous George as the inspiration for his braggadocio. George retired from wrestling in November 1962. He died of a heart attack just 13 months year later, on December 26, 1963. He was only 48 years old.

Watch Muhammad Ali (who was not known for his power)knock out the fearsome Sonny Liston with the infamous phantom punch. Renowned boxing journalist Red Smith declared, 'I saw the punch. George Foreman defends his world heavyweight title against Ken Norton in Caracas, Venezuela in January 1974. Norton survives one round against the heavy-hitting champ but he does not get through round two. Listen for Muhammad Ali shouting instructions to Norton. Clearly, Ali preferred facing Norton rather than Foreman.

Cassius Clay/Muhammad Ali graces the cover of the April 1964 edition of The Ring magazine, modestly proclaiming himself to be 'the king' after his title-winning upset over Sonny Liston in February. After his victory, Clay announced to the world that he was shedding his 'slave name.' He briefly called himself 'Cassius X' before adopting the name Muhammad Ali. Nevertheless, many media folks continued to refer to him as Cassius Clay well into the 1970s.
