The Ring Magazine I enjoy collecting sports memorabilia. I have a large collection of The Ring Magazine, the self-proclaimed Bible of Boxing. I especially love the magazine covers from the 1940s and early 1950s. They were terrific works of art--especially those created by C. R. Scharre! Check out this cover from the December 1952 issue featuring new heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano and former champ Jack Dempsey. Founded in 1922, The Ring Magazine is apparently the fourth most collected magazine in America (behind National Geographic, Playboy, and Life).

Marciano Walcott Rematch 1953 Rocky Marciano makes quick work of Jersey Joe Walcott in their eagerly awaited heavyweight title rematch in 1953. Marciano had taken the title from Walcott with a spectacular 13th-round knockout in Philadelphia in 1952. The rematch, as you will see, is no contest. Marciano wins easily despite Walcott's claim of a quick count.

Rocky Marciano Plane Crash This is a photo of the wreckage of the small private plane in which former world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano (and two others) perished on August 30, 1969. The plane crashed in Newton, Iowa. It was taking Marciano to a birthday party planned in his honor. He died a day short of his 46th birthday.

Floyd Patterson on Whats My Line Recently crowned world heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson was a mystery challenger on the December 16, 1956 episode of What's My Line. On November 30 Patterson had won the title (vacated by the retirement of Rocky Marciano) by knocking out Archie Moore in eight rounds.

Rocky Marciano Kayos Joe Louis Boxing fans call it a crossroads fight: a young fighter ascends at the expense of an older fighter on the decline. Here's the best example of this: From October 26, 1951, rising young slugger Rocky Marciano ends the career of 37-year-old former heavyweight champion Joe Louis. This clip shows the final 28 seconds of the fight without commentary. None is necessary.

Rocky Marciano Wins Heavyweight Title One of boxing's most memorable knockout punches: The date is September 23, 1952. Trailing on the scorecards after 12 rounds, challenger Rocky Marciano knocks out champion Jersey Joe Walcott with one devastating right hand in he fateful 13th round. (The commentary is in Italian.)

Rocky Marciano Battles Ezzard Charles On June 17, 1954, world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano had his toughest title defense. Challenger Ezzard Charles (a former champ) took Marciano the 15-round distance. It was a rugged affair, as this photo shows.

Rocky Marciano Punch Photo One of my favorite sports photographs: Challenger Rocky Marciano lands a solid right hand on champ Jersey Joe Walcott's jaw during their September 23, 1952 world heavyweight title fight in Philadelphia. Trailing on the scorecards, Marciano rallied to win by a 13th-round kayo. Many people wrongly assume this was the knockout punch; it wasn't. Walcott was along the ropes when Marciano caught him with the fateful blow.

Rocky Marciano Timex Ad In this 1954 ad from the Saturday Evening Post, world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano puts a Timex watch to an odd torture test by wearing it during a gym workout. Said the ad, “The Timex Waterproof Marlin rides Rocky Marciano’s smashing, jolting punches on the body bag, the rapid, bouncing blows in the light bag, then a hot and cold shower. At the end of this workout, Rocky checked and said: ‘Still running, and right on time. It’s true that Timex takes a licking and keeps on ticking – a true champion’.”
