Coogan Law After co-starring in Charlie Chaplin's film The Kid (1921), Jackie Coogan was one of America's first major child stars. Unfortunately, because there was no precedent for a child actor earning thousands of dollars, there were no laws to protect Coogan's financial interests. At the time, minors had absolutely no legal claims to their earnings--every penny belonged to one's parents. Coogan found this out the hard way, when, at age 21 in 1935, he discovered his earnings were almost all gone. Coogan was then put in the awkward position of having to sue his mother and his former agent to recover a small portion of wht he had earned. In response, Congress passed the Coogan Law to protect future child actors' earnings. Unfortunately, the original law contained too many loopholes, renedering it virtually ineffective. Revised versions over the years have been far more effective in protecting the earnings of minors.

Listowel Arena Disaster 50th Anniversary Fifty years ago today, on Saturday morning, February 28, 1959, in a small Canadian town not far from where I live, a terrible tragedy occurred: The roof of the Listowel (Ontario) Arena collapsed due to a heavy accumulation of snow and inadequate construction. Seven peewee hockey players (aged 10, 11 and 12) and Listowel's recreation director were crushed to death by the debris while they were on the ice surface. A group of other young players preparing for their upcoming game in the arena's dressing rooms were completely unscathed. The arena was only four years old.

Rocky Marciano Plane Crash This is a photo of the wreckage of the small private plane in which former world heavyweight champion Rocky Marciano (and two others) perished on August 30, 1969. The plane crashed in Newton, Iowa. It was taking Marciano to a birthday party planned in his honor. He died a day short of his 46th birthday.

The Weather Underground- Warning Strong Language In 1969, a small group of college students announced their intentions to overthrow the U.S. government in opposition to the Vietnam War. This documentary explores the rise and fall of this radical movement as former members speak candidly about the passion that drove them at the time. The film also explores the group in the context of other social movements of the time, featuring interviews with former members of the Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the Black Panther Party. The documentary also examines the U.S. government's suppression of dissent during this turbulent era. Using archival footage from the 1960s and 1970s, the film also intersperses recent interviews with high profile ex-Weathermen like Bernardine Dohrn, David Gilbert, Bill Ayers, Mark Rudd and Brian Flanagan, who talk about their involvement in the organization, their experiences, and the trajectory that led them to be placed on the FBI's Most Wanted list.

HHOF Librarian The Hilarious House of Frightenstein was one of the oddest kids' shows ever made--and one of the best. It was a locally produced show done by CHCH-TV in a small studio in Hamilton, Ontario. Billy Van played most of the show's characters--including the Librarian who vainly tried to terrify viewers with benign works of children's literature.

Steven Truscott Case 1959 Canada's most famous criminal case of the 20th century revolved around the rape and murder of 12-year-old Lynne Harper near Clinton, Ontario in 1959. A schoolmate, 14-year-old Steven Truscott, stood trial, was convicted of murder, and sentenced to hang. The sentence was eventually reduced to life imprisonment. With some doubts lingering over the accuracy of Truscott's conviction, and sympathy because of his age, Truscott was eventually paroled from prison in 1969. He lived for many years in Guelph, Ontario under an assumed name. In 2000 he shed his alias and began to publicly clamor for a new trial. Truscott's conviction was eventually overturned in 2007 because of what the Ontario Court of Appeals perceived as "a miscarriage of justice," though the court did not formally declare him innocent. Truscott was also awarded a $6.5 million settlement by the Province of Ontario. Is Truscott a murderer? Polls generally show Canadians think he is innocent by a 3:1 ratio. However the Harper family, usually forgotten by the media and the Truscott advocates, is convinced of Truscott's guilt. The victim's older brother has publicly called the payment to Truscott a travesty. The news of it seriously affected the health of Lynne's aged father. And little Lynne Harper remains 12 years old forever...

Holiday Wishes from Senator Joe Lieberman I had the privilege this week to interview Joe Lieberman, Senator to the State of Connecticut. He was also the Vice Presidential pick by Al Gore, and a brief Presidential Candidate in 2004. There will be more from this interview throughout the week with his views on the bailouts, taxes and the controversy of this normally Democrat backing John McCain
