1941 TV trailer while there was unfortunate static in the source tape here is the television trailer for Steven Spielberg's 1979 comedy "1941", a $30 million all-star affair released in December to mostly terrible reviews and lackluster box-office. In the years since it has picked up a number of admirers for its crazy energy, and the film was rightly Oscar-nominated for its special effects work (featuring exceptional miniature work, long before the days of CGI).

Starsky and Hutch TV opening After its 1975 pilot film proved a ratings success ABC gave approval for a full series of STARSKY AND HUTCH, an action-packed cop show that enjoyed a four season run. Paul Michael Glaser and David Soul starred as unorthodox plain clothes police officers Dave Starsky and Ken "Hutch" Hutchinson, fighting crime with the occasional assistance of their hip street snitch Huggy Bear (played by Antonio Fargas). Bernie Hamilton co-starred as their superior, Captain Dobey, and an additional star was the tire-squealing Ford Gran Torino that was frequently in the middle of the action.

Ernie Kovacs Fatal Car Crash Early on the morning of January 13, 1962, comedian Ernie Kovacs was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Beverly Hills. He was 10 days away from his 43rd birthday. Kovacs had attended a party at the home of Milton Berle to celebrate the Christening of Berle's son. Kovacs and wife Edie Adams arrived in separate cars. Adams left the party not long before her husband. During a sudden rainstorm, Kovacs lost control of his vehicle on a curve. It slammed into a utility pole, partially ejecting Kovacs from the car. He died instantly from massive head and chest injuries. Police theorized Kovacs may have lost control of the car while groping for one of his trademark cigars. Kovacs was driving a Corvair, a vehicle later exposed by Ralph Nader for being unsafe in turns. Many newspapers featured a photo of Kovacs' dead body at the accident scene. Largely forgotten today, Kovacs was a brilliant comedian whose off-the-wall humor was years ahead of his time. David Letterman cites Kovacs as a huge influence. At the time of his death Kovacs was deeply in debt with the IRS. (Kovacs believed the taxation system was unfair so he steadfastly refused to pay income tax.) His widow worked for years to clear his debt. A daughter of Kovacs and Adams also died in a car crash in 1982.

Dunblane School Shooting On March 13, 1996, unemployed former shopkeeper and former Scout leader Thomas Watt Hamilton committed one of the most dastardly crimes in the history of Great Britain. That morning Hamilton walked into the Dunblane Primary School in Dunblane, Scotland. Although Great Britain has strict gun control laws, Hamilton was armed with two 9-mm Browning HP pistols and two Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum revolvers--all legally held. He was carrying 743 cartridges, and fired his weapons 109 times. After gaining entry to the school, Hamilton made his way to the gymnasium and opened fire on Gwen Mayor's class of five- and six-year-olds (shown in the photo), killing or wounding all but one person. Fifteen children died together with Mayor who was killed trying to protect them. Hamilton then left the gymnasium through the emergency exit. From the playground he began shooting into a mobile classroom. No one was injured there because an alert teacher had warned her class to take cover under their desks. Hamilton also fired at a group of children walking in a corridor, injuring one teacher. Hamilton returned into the gym and killed himself with a bullet to the head. A further 11 children and three adults were rushed to the hospital as soon as the emergency services arrived. One of these children was pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital. The motive for the shooting is unknown, but Hamilton was well known in Dunblane for being odd and creepy. He had been stripped of his scout leader credentials and his private sports clubs had been shut down by local officials because of Hamilton's alleged paedophilic tendencies toward young boys. Among the uninjured pupils at the school was eight-year-old future tennis star Andy Murray who seldom discusses that day's tragic events.

Dagmar - First Late-Night TV Star Anyone remember Dagmar? Dagmar Lewis (born Virginia Ruth in 1921) was an American actress, model and television personality of the 1950s. As a statuesque, busty blonde, she became the first major female star of television, receiving much press coverage during that decade. After her marriage to Angelo Lewis in 1941, she moved to New York where he was a naval officer. She adopted Jennie Lewis as her stage name (taken from her married name, Virginia Lewis). To keep busy, she became a fashion photographer's model--which got the buxom blonde noticed. Although she had no show business experience, she was cast in a Broadway musical revue, Laffing Room Only. In 1950, Lewis was hired by Jerry Lester as his sidekick for NBC's first late-night TV show: Broadway Open House (195052), the forerunner to The Tonight Show. Lester renamed her Dagmar. Billed as "a girl singer," she was instructed to wear a low-cut gown, sit on a stool, and play the role of a stereotypical dumb blonde. No one remembers her ever singing on the show. With tight sweaters displaying her curvy 5'8" figure (measuring 42"-23"-39"), her dim-bulb character was an immediate success, and the show emerged as a surprise hit for NBC. Dagmar soon attracted much more attention than Lester and showed that she was both bright and quick-witted when she appeared in sketches. Lester enjoyed making occasional jokes about her "hidden talents." Her personal appearances created a sensation, leading to much press coverage and a salary increase from $75 to $1,250 per week. With Dagmar getting all the attention, Lester walked off his own show in May 1951, and Dagmar carried on as the program's sole host. On July 16, 1951, she was featured on the cover of Life Magazine. However, Broadway Open House came to an end one month later. Undaunted, Dagmar became one of the leading personalities of early 1950s live television, doing sketch comedy on Milton Berle's Texaco Star Theater, The Bob Hope Show, and several other programs. In 1952, she hosted Dagmar's Canteen, a 15-minute program that aired at 12:15 a.m. on Saturday nights. She sang, danced, interviewed servicemen, and performed comedy, but the show was cancelled after just 12 weeks. She died a month before her 80th birthday in 2001.

Ozzies Girls Does anyone (besides me) even remember the short-lived syndicated sitcom Ozzie's Girls? It aired in 1973. Twenty-four episodes were made. Here was the premise: Ozzie and Harriet Nelson, now empty-nesters, decide to rent their sons' old bedrooms to a pair of college girls named Susie Hamilton and Brenda MacKenzie. (Strangely, Brenda was known as Jennifer for the first few episodes; the name change was never explained.) The show's plots often centered around the parents of two boys now having to cope with two females in their house--mostly Ozzie's difficulties in adapting to a female-dominated home. David Nelson produced the series. Derided by Total Television as a "limp sequel" to The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet, Ozzie's Girls never caught on. It was not renewed for a second season.
