Lucy and Desi although this pic didn't come from the I LOVE LUCY show (it's obviously a publicity shot) i still like it a lot. And now, a little "I LOVE LUCY" TRIVIA: *It was the first to tape before a live audience. *Fred and Ethel's bickering relationship didn't require much acting; in real life Vivian Vance and William Frawley didn't care for each other at all. *Did you know that the original names for the Ricardos would have been Lucy and Larry Lopez? In the lost pilot episode, the voiceover says "You are about to see the pilot episode of the show that was almost I Love Lopez." *In the episode entitled "Lucy is Enceinte". .if you look carefully at the beginning, Lucy is reading McCall's Magazine, and "I LOVE LUCY" is on the cover.

Danny Lopez SI Cover 1979 One of my favorite boxers, exciting world featherweight champion Danny (Little Red) Lopez, was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated on February 12, 1979--29 years ago today. In today's repressive, politically correct society, there's no way SI would run that photo and use that caption. It generated no complaints in 1979, though.

Lopez Vs Malvarez 1978 Some months ago I posted a 1979 Sports Illustrated cover featuring exciting world featherweight champion Danny 'Little Red' Lopez. Here he is defending his title against Argentina's Juan Malvarez on September 15, 1978 in a short but dramatic contest. Lopez was a notoriously slow starter who often got decked early by his opponent. Lopez would invariably roar back and score a knockout...like he did here.

Salvador Sanchez Had Mexico's Salvador Sanchez lived longer, he may have gone down as the greatest featherweight champion in boxing history. As an unheralded 21-year-old, Sanchez upset popular Danny Lopez to win the WBC version of the featherweight title on February 2, 1980. Combining punching power and boxing skill, Sanchez defeated all comers and became a fixture on network TV--a rarity for a Mexican fighter. He defeated Lopez in a rematch and a young Azumah Nelson, who would become a great champion himself. On July 21, 1982, Sanchez was killed in a single-vehicle automobile crash in Mexico. He was 23 years old. His pro record was 44-1-1.

I Love Lucy Pilot Episode Rediscovered I Love Lucy was the first American sitcom to be shot and preserved on 35-mm film, thus ensuring every episode could be shown forever in reruns. However, the pilot episode had mysteriously vanished after it had aired in 1951. For nearly four decades it could not be located, much to the frustration of the show's devoted fans. In 1990, the widow of Pepito Perez, a Spanish clown who had appeared in the pilot episode, announced the good news: She had found the missing episode while dusting under a bed in her home! Apparently Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz had given the only existing copy of the episode to her late husband as a thank-you gift--and quickly forgot about it. It had sat undisturbed in Perez's home for nearly 40 years. Perez had died in 1975. Both Lucy and Desi had also died by the time the pilot episode had been rediscovered. With only a slight bit of restoration needed to the film, CBS aired it as part of an I Love Lucy retrospective on April 30, 1990. Some notable differences in the pilot from the rest of the series: Lucy and Ricky's last name was Lopez instead of Ricardo; their apartment was markedly different; and landlords Fred and Ethel Mertz were nowhere to be seen. Lucy was quite obviously wearing maternity clothes in the pilot, although no mention was made of her pregnancy. The child in the womb was Lucy Arnaz--who hosted the 1990 retrospective show.

Death of Salvador Sanchez - 1982 Boixing lost a terrific champion way too early in the summer of 1982. Salvador Sánchez of Mexico was well on his way to becoming the greatest featherwight boxer of all time. Sánchez was 44-1-1 in 46 career fights. He had upset popular Danny (Little Red ) Lopez in February 1980 to win the WBC version of the 126-pound title. He went on to defend it numerous times in the next 30 months. Sánchez was a skilled boxer/puncher who could wear down an opponent with accurate, sharp, stinging blows. He was, not surprisingly, a national hero in Mexico. Sadly Sánchez was killed in a sngle-car crash in Mexico on August 12, 1982. He was just 23 years old. At the time he was training for a rematch with the tough Juan Laporte. Sánchez had beaten Laporte in December 1980. Sánchez's last fight was a skillful 15-round knockout of Azumah Nelson in New York City's Madison Square Garden about three weeks before the fatal car accident. Sánchez crashed on the early morning while driving his Porsche 928 sports car along the Mexican federal highway from Santiago de Querétaro to San Luis Potosí, dying instantly. Sánchez was posthumously inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1991.

A Tribute to the Queen of Tajono Music Selena Quintanilla Perez March 31 1995 Thank you Katie Grunewald for the video: Selena Quintanilla-Pérez (April 16, 1971 – March 31, 1995), known simply as Selena, was an American singer-songwriter. She was named the "top Latin artist of the '90s" and "Best selling Latin artist of the decade" by Billboard for her fourteen top-ten singles in the Top Latin Songs chart, including seven number-one hits. The singer had the most successful singles of 1994 and 1995, "Amor Prohibido" and "No Me Queda Más". She was called "The Queen of Tejano music" and the Mexican equivalent of Madonna. Selena released her first album, Selena y Los Dinos, at the age of twelve. She won Female Vocalist of the Year at the 1987 Tejano Music Awards and landed a recording contract with EMI a few years later. Her fame grew throughout the early 1990s, especially in Spanish-speaking countries. Selena was murdered at the age of 23 by Yolanda Saldívar, the president of her fan club. On April 12, 1995, two weeks after her death, George W. Bush, governor of Texas at the time, declared her birthday "Selena Day" in Texas. Warner Bros. produced Selena, a film based on her life starring Jennifer Lopez, in 1997. Selena's life was also the basis of the musical Selena Forever starring Veronica Vazquez as Selena. In June 2006 Selena was commemorated with a life-sized bronze statue (Mirador de la Flor in Corpus Christi, Texas) and a Selena museum opened there. She has sold over 60 million albums worldwide.

Politically Incorrect Lalo Guerrero Pancho Lopez 1955 Guerrero is known as the Father of the Chicano Music. He recorded and wrote many songs in all sorts of genre. He also wrote children songs and songs about Cesar Chavez, other farm workers and braceros. For "Pancho Lopez" (his biggest hit), Guerrero used the Davy Crockett melody and wrote his own lyrics, telling the story of a legendary Mexican character. The song was popular in both Spanish and English. However, due to criticism Guerrero received over this song, he never performed it publicly, not wanting to contribute to an inappropriate stereotype. Guerrero was officially declared a national folk treasure by the Smithsonian Institution in 1980 and was presented with the National Medal of Arts in 1996 by then United States President Bill Clinton. In 1992 Guerrero received the National Heritage Award from the National Endowment of the Arts. In late 2005 Guerrero was posthumously inducted into the Arizona Music and Entertainment Hall of Fame. Along with that he was also inducted into the Tejano Hall of Fame and the Mariachi Hall of Fame. Guerrero died on March 17, 2005, in Rancho Mirage, California. Guerrero's contributions have resulted in Las Glorias, a restaurant in central Phoenix, displaying a poster of him with his signature on it on the wall for everyone to see in loving memory of him. He also has a painting of him on a freeway wall in Tucson. In 1994 a Golden Palm Star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars dedicated to him.
