Gerry and The Pacemakers were one of the few groups in the 60's to initially challenge The Beatles in popularity. Like The Beatles, they came from Liverpool and were also managed by Brian Epstein. Despite their early success, the group never had another number one single in the UK. Gerry Marsden began writing most of their own songs, including "It's Gonna Be All Right", "I'm the One", and "Ferry Cross the Mersey", as well as their first and biggest U.S. hit, "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying".
All of these represented the band's light, poppy, enjoyable sound. By late 1965, their popularity was rapidly declining on both sides of the Atlantic. They lacked both the innovations of the Beatles and the rawer musical and visual edge of some of the other British Invasion groups, and they soon seemed un-hip. They disbanded in October 1966, with much of their latter recorded material never released in the UK. Drummer Freddie Marsden died on December 9, 2006, at age 66.

An almost forgotten maritime tragedy is the sinking of The Empress of Ireland, a trans-Atlantic ocean linear owned by the Canadian Pacific Steamship Company. At about 2 a.m. on May 29, 1914, during one of its regular voyages from Quebec City to Liverpool, it collided with the Norwegian ship Storstad in the cold waters of the St. Lawrence River. Out of the 1,477 passengers aboard, 1,012 perished. The high death toll was largely attributable to how quickly the ship sank (14 minutes) and that most of the passengers were in bed when the accident occurred. Among the dead were 167 Salvation Army musicians who were travelling to England to perform at a charity function. A Canadian inquiry into the disaster blamed the Storstad for the collision while a Norwegian inquiry blamed the Empress of Ireland. For years the Empress of Ireland was visited by scuba divers who plundered some of its valuables. However, it is now illegal to dive near the wreck as the Canadian government has declared it a maritime gravesite. (There are human remains inside the ship.) There are no living survivors from that awful night. The last one died in 1985.

In 1957 while at Liverpool College of Art, Thelma Pickles became John Lennon's first girlfriend. In 1959, after coming back to college, Thelma went out with Paul McCartney, briefly, just before he met Dot Rhone. Thelma went on to marry Roger McGrough, from Scaffold, with Paul McCartney's brother, Mike, in the band. During their marriage, Roger composed a book of poems, "Summer with Monika", dedicated to her. In the 1970s, Thelma and Roger divorced. Thelma went on to become a television producer, producing Cilla Black's "Blind Date"
