On May 13, 1994 Johnny Carson made a surprise appearance on The Late Show when David Letterman was doing some shows in Los Angeles. Johnny was savvy enough to let the moment speak for itself and not say a word!

My favorite movie star ever (Shirley Temple) does a song-and-dance number with George Murphy in Little Miss Broadway (1938). According to Shirley's autobiography, after they had completed this scene, the crew asked for an encore. (Of course Shirley and George obliged.)

Clara Bow, the It Girl, was the biggest silent movie starlet in the world in 1927 and 1928. (I believe she still holds the world record for most fan mail received by anyone in a month.) She was a natural beauty whose perkiness jumped off the screen. Her career petered out when talkies came in. Many people wrongly assume her voice didn't suit talkies well. Actually her voice wasn't unpleasant at all. However, she was uncomfortable with the new medium of talking films and just slowly faded into obscurity. I think this montage is captivating.

On July 31, 1940, British prime minister Winston Churchill visited the coastal defenses near Hartlepool, England during the bleakest period of the Battle of Britain. During his inspection of the troops, he was photographed holding a machine gun (or tommy gun as the Brits call it). The British press thought the photo was unflattering and it got little attention. However, the Germans obtained a copy and thought it had potential as anti-Churchill propaganda. They equated the photo with lawless American gangsters and used it to create a leaflet. Thousands of copies of this photo, bearing the caption 'Wanted for Incitement to Murder,' were dropped over London in an attempt to portray Churchill in a negative light. It didn't work. Far from being offended, the Londoners loved the image of their gun-toting PM. Thus the German propaganda leaflet had the opposite effect from what had been intended. It became a prized possession for Londoners.

During a time when teenagers were doing the jitterbug and Uncle Sam was asking young men to enlist, The Andrews Sisters were America’s most popular female singing group. Patty, the youngest sister, was a loud and energetic blond who headed the group with her confident vocals. The middle sister was Maxene, a brunette, whose harmonic range gave the impression of four voices instead of three. In 1965 when I graduated high school my dad FINALLY let me get my driver's license so I could get a car and a job. Of course he went with me because he was going to make the down payment, so I had to really talk him into the car I wanted, as it was a 1963 fire engine red Dodge Dart GT ragtop. It was gorgeous, at least to me. My dad wasn't really crazy about it, because he said it had probably been owned by some teenager who drag raced it all the time, but hey, that was my dad. He did agree after a little whining, and I drove it out of the lot straight to my best friend's house! I was so excited, my first car, and it looked like something I had only dreamed of owning. He had wanted me to get a Metropolitan, because he said they were safer. Ugh. I had such good times in this car, going down the road with the radio blasting out the Beatles, at 100 mph. I drove it to my first job, I still remember heading home on the Interstate late at night, in the dead of a Florida winter (50 degrees), with the top down and the heat on full blast. A few months later I met Larry, he kept my car one day while I was at work and had the nerve to take off the white twin racing stripes I had put on the hood and the trunk. I was crushed! And my dad made it worse by thanking him for doing it!! So my car made it through our first born in 1966 and then I had to part with her when she began having oil problems. But I will always miss my little Dodge Dart.
