From 1957, comedian Ernie Kovacs appears as a surprise mystery challenger on What's My Line. At the time, Kovacs was a semi-regular panelist on the show. (Kovacs was supposed to be in Hollywood that Sunday, but he missed his train and decided to be a WML contestant instead!)

Edie Adams, the Tony award-winning actress and singer who was perhaps best known to a generation of television viewers as the seductive commercial spokeswoman for Muriel Cigars, has died. She was 81.

Early on the morning of January 13, 1962, comedian Ernie Kovacs was killed in a single-vehicle accident in Beverly Hills. He was 10 days away from his 43rd birthday. Kovacs had attended a party at the home of Milton Berle to celebrate the Christening of Berle's son. Kovacs and wife Edie Adams arrived in separate cars. Adams left the party not long before her husband. During a sudden rainstorm, Kovacs lost control of his vehicle on a curve. It slammed into a utility pole, partially ejecting Kovacs from the car. He died instantly from massive head and chest injuries. Police theorized Kovacs may have lost control of the car while groping for one of his trademark cigars. Kovacs was driving a Corvair, a vehicle later exposed by Ralph Nader for being unsafe in turns. Many newspapers featured a photo of Kovacs' dead body at the accident scene. Largely forgotten today, Kovacs was a brilliant comedian whose off-the-wall humor was years ahead of his time. David Letterman cites Kovacs as a huge influence. At the time of his death Kovacs was deeply in debt with the IRS. (Kovacs believed the taxation system was unfair so he steadfastly refused to pay income tax.) His widow worked for years to clear his debt. A daughter of Kovacs and Adams also died in a car crash in 1982.

Here is the artistic comedian during late summer of 1955 doing "The Nairobi Trio" bit for more laughs than could of been thought. Ernie's wife played on the piano usually, with Ernie seated, suffering the consequences by putting up with the hat hitting ape. The other entertaining simien was a good friend that Ernie knew well. It was always a television mystery that no one knew who was included? Many were believing, either Jack Lemmon or Frank Sinatra could of been "the one" in this clip. This kind of comedy really translated well with Ernie's ideas. His inventive reputation for high quality television at the time was unique. Nothing was ever held back with his television on-going comedy acts.
This "famous" sketch was perfomed a few times; and always was a winner with television viewers. In a recent auction, one of the masks was autioned off for almost $6,000 dollars American. As shown, Ernie was ahead of his time on television with his inventive sight gags and quirky comedy pranks. Kovacs has remained a favorite with many performers ever since his badly timed passing.
