This is the tail end of an excellent Canadian documentary about the defense of Hong Kong in 1941. In December 1941, some 2,000 green Canadian troops were sent to bolster the exotic British outpost against an expected Japanese attack. It was a suicide mission. The Japanese attacked with about 90,000 battle-hardened troops. The heroic defense of Hong Kong lasted about three weeks before the inevitable surrender. Japanese troops brutally murdered wounded hospitalized defenders. Captured Canadian and British troops were shipped to slave labor camps where they existed in horrid conditions for nearly four years. June 30, 1997 was the last day of British rule over Hong Kong. The British 99-year lease on Hong Kong ended at the stroke of midnight, and the island became part of China.

Bert Sommer (February 7, 1949 -- July 23, 1990) was a folk singer who performed at Woodstock in 1969 and had a hit with the song "We're All Playing In The Same Band." He was briefly a member of baroque-pop group the Left Banke, co-writing and singing lead on the "Ivy Ivy"/"And Suddenly" single. He also played Woof in the original Broadway production of "Hair (musical)" and "Flatbush" of Kaptain Kool and the Kongs on The Krofft Supershow in 1976. He died in Troy, NY after a long battle with respiratory illness. His last performance was in Troy on June 11, 1990 with his friend Johnny Rabb.
