Father Knows Best was the classic wholesome family situation comedy. It was set in the typical Midwestern community of Springfield, where Jim Anderson was an agent for the General Insurance Company. Every evening he would come home from work, take off his sport jacket, put on his comfortable sweater, and deal with the everyday problems of a growing family. In contrast to most other family comedies of the period, in which one of the other parents was a blundering idiot, both Jim and his wife Margaret were portrayed as thoughtful, responsible adults. When a family crisis arose, Jim would calm the waters with a warm smile and some sensible advice.
The show originally aired on radio in 1958. CBS debuted it in 1954, but it was cancelled after one year. NBC picked it up and put it in an earlier time slot, where the whole family could watch it. The show then ran successfully for the next five years and became a television classic.

Red Skelton is the mystery guest on this 1954 episode. The rules at that time permitted a panelist to keep questioning a mystery guest until a negative response was given. Fred Allen keeps getting affirmative answers from Red. When it's obvious that Allen knows who the mystery guest is, he makes a classic remark.

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm an animal lover, which also applies to my choice of cartoons. My two favorite little guys have always been Chip n Dale, two Chipmunks that just can't stay out of mischief. Here they are from 1951, in Chicken In The Rough.

I'd bet that not one person in 100 knows who invented television. It was a teenage boy named Philo T. Farnsworth who came up with the design back in 1922. Here he is on I've Got A Secret in 1957. His secret stumps the panel.

Thirty-seven-year-old British mountaineer George Mallory may have reached the summit of Mount Everest in 1924--29 years before Sir Edmund Hillary achieved the feat. In June 1924, Mallory and Andrew Irvine attempted to reach Everest's summit via the North Col route. The twosome were last spotted a few hundred metres from the summit by geologist Noel Odell. They were not seen alive again. Mallory's well preserved frozen body was not found until 1999. (Irvine's body has yet to be found.) Did Mallory die trying to reach the summit or did he reach it and perish on the descent? Nobody knows for certain. His camera has not been found. However, Mallory intended to leave a photo of his wife at Everest's summit if he got there. The photo was not found on Mallory's body.

Everybody knows that Jackie Robinson was the first black major league baseball player, right? Wrong--by 63 years! Moses Fleetwood (Fleet) Walker, a barehanded catcher, played 42 games for the Toledo Blue Stockings of the American Association way back in 1884 when the AA was a major league. Walker's presence on the team created considerable controversy. Walker was subjected to death threats and snubbed by his own teammates. His brother Welday joined the team for a while too, appearing in five games as an outfielder. However, with owners, players and fans all showing open hostility toward blacks, the major league moguls made a 'gentleman's agreement' not to sign any more black players after 1884. This tacit pact stood until Jackie Robinson took the field for the Brooklyn Dodgers on opening day 1947.

This is a shot from the 1935 black and white movie starring Irene Dunne as a deposed White Russian princess who has become a famed Parisian couturier. Dunne is the partner of "Roberta" (Helen Westley), who passes away, leaving her half of the business to American football player Randolph Scott—who of course knows next to nothing about the gown business, and couldn't care less anyway.
Keep an eye out for a blond Lucille Ball as a fashion model. . .
