Here's one for you conspiracy theorists to ponder: Was newspaper columnist Dorothy Kilgallen murdered? Famous for her role as a permanent panelist on What's My Line and for her entertainment and gossip column in the New York Journal American, Kilgallen often covered major news events. She reported on the Sam Sheppard murder trial and the Lindbergh kidnapping case, among others. She also expressed serious doubts about the Warren Commission's investigation of JFK's murder. Kilgallen interviewed Jack Ruby in prison shortly before her death on November 8, 1965--just hours after she had appeared live and quite chipper on What's My Line. Kilgallen was found dead in her Manhattan home, fully clothed on a bed in which she did not sleep. A book she had finished reading months ago was near her. Although alcohol and barbituates were found in her blood stream, Kilgallen's official cause of death was listed as undetermined. The coroner who did the paperwork was responsible for autopsies in Brooklyn--not Manhattan. Kilgallen's notes from her interview with Jack Ruby were never found--leading conspiracy theorists to wonder whether she had ben silenced.

American League baseball umpire Ed Hurley appeared as a challenger on What's My Line in this episode from October 4, 1953. In the early days of What's My Line, the panelists were each permitted a 'free guess' as to what the contestant's occupation was. Even though Hurley signed in with the alias 'John Doe,' Dorothy Kilgallen correctly guessed Hurley's job. (Hurley relates a funny story about an incident that occurred that day in the fifth game of the World Series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Yankees.)

In this 1956 episode of What's My Line, singing star Johnnie Ray stumped the panel with his well disguised voice. (Scandal alert! Ray and panelist Dorothy Kilgallen, who was married, were later romantically linked. They first met each other on this night. Ray died in 1990 at the age of 63. His sexuality has long been questioned. He was twice arrested in the 1950s for soliciting gay sex. He had one short-lived marriage.)

This is the final nine minutes of the November 7, 1965 episode of What's My Line. It's shows the conclusion of Joey Heatherton's mystery guest appearance, a commercial for Kool cigarettes, and a regular challenger--a female football writer. Panelist Dorothy Kilgallen fittingly identified the final contestant's occupation. Kilgallen, age 52, was found dead in her home the next morning. The circumstances surrounding her untimely death have raised a few eyebrows over the years.
