Even though most of you may not know who this man was, there are many who do, and who will always think of him with a great deal of honor and respect, I am one of them. Simon Wiesenthal, was a Holocaust survivor who helped track down numerous Nazi war criminals following World War II and spent the later decades of his life fighting anti-Semitism and prejudice against all people. He died on Sept. 20, 2005 at the age of 96. The contribution of this man to history is best described as keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive during the crucial years.
In the 1950s, the US was busy with the Cold War, while Israel had its own troubles with the Arabs. He just took the job. It was a job no one else wanted. He was the only full-time Nazi hunter. A day after World War II ended, Wiesenthal handed over a crumbling list of Nazis to US Army intelligence. He did not want to be a Nazi hunter, he was an architect by profession. However, the Holocaust forced him into action; 89 members of his family were murdered by the Nazis. He couldn't forget, he believed someone had to go after the criminals. In the last couple of years his health deteriorated, but his mind remained clear. Aside from Adolph Eichmann, among the 1,100 Nazi war criminals Wiesenthal helped bring to justice, were the commanders of Treblinka and Sobibor, and also the Nazi who arrested Anne Frank, Karl Silberbauer. More than anyone else in the world, he represented the belief that anti-Semitism and crimes against humanity are not mitigated with passing time, nor are they ever forgiven.
"May he rest in eternal peace knowing he did what was right."

If you hadn't guessed by now, I like music with atmosphere. This piece by Karl Jenkins has been used in Ads, TV programmes and film. The lead singer in this song is Miriam Stockley (not Enya) and her voice is quite unique. The video that goes along with this is a compilation of clips from the BBC's Planet Earth series, a must see if your into natural history.

Before the heavy-metal intros for relief pitchers, before the JumboTron and even the electronic scoreboard, there was Karl Ehrhardt and his signs at Shea Stadium.
Dubbed the "Sign Man of Shea," Ehrhardt captured the moods of Mets fans in the 1960s and '70s with thousands of handmade placards. For players who made errors, one read: "BUM." After a clutch Mets hit: "WUNNERFUL." And upon the last out of the 1969 World Series, which the Mets won: "THERE ARE NO WORDS."
Ehrhardt died from natural causes in his Glen Oaks, Queens, home on Monday, his family said. He was 83.

Hazel Court, an English actress who co-starred with the likes of Boris Karloff and Vincent Price in popular horror movies of the 1950s and '60s, has died. She was 82. Court died early Tuesday of a heart attack at her home near Lake Tahoe, daughter Sally Walsh said Wednesday. While she had a substantial acting career both in England and on American TV, Court was perhaps best known for her work in such films as 1963's "The Raven." She co-starred with Price, Karloff and Peter Lorre in director Roger Corman's take on the classic Edgar Allan Poe poem.
Corman directed her in five movies. Like other "scream queens" of the era, Court often relied on her cleavage and her ability to shriek in fear and die horrible deaths for her roles. "The Premature Burial,""The Masque of the Red Death,""The Curse of Frankenstein" and "Devil Girl from Mars" helped propel her to cult status and brought her fan mail even in her later years. 'She'd probably get over 100 pieces of fan mail a month and she would reply to every single one,' her daughter said.
Court had finished an autobiography, "Hazel Court - Horror Queen," which will be published in Britain.

Early on the morning of July 24, 1915, the lake passenger steamer Eastland cast off from the Chicago River dock at the Clark Street Bridge with On board 2,572, all Western Electric Company employees and their families.
What was to have been a pleasant Lake Michigan cruise and picnic quickly turned into Chicago's worst single disaster. As she pulled away from the dock, the Eastland. slowly rolled over on her side and settled on the mud of the river bottom.
Of the 2,572 persons on board, 844+ lost their lives
For the 1,728 who did survive, their lives would be changed forever
This is dedicated to the 1915 Western Electric Family - the 844 who perished and those who survived - to the firefighters, police, and Chicago citizens who rushed to their aid.
your bravery will be remembered!
