Herb Washington Pickoff - 1974 WS In 1974 Oakland Athletics' owner Charlie Finley signed 22-year-old Herb Washington to an MBL contract. Washington's baseball experience was minimal, but he did hold the indoor world record in the 50-yard dash. Throughout the 1974 season, Washington never once batted or played a defensive position. His sole task was to pinch-run. He stole 29 bases in 45 attempts--which is not really a good success rate for a fast MLB baserunner. In Game #2 of the 1974 World Series, Washington was brought in to pinch-run for Joe Rudi in the top of the ninth inning with one out and the A's trailing the L.A. Dodgers 3-2. To the delight of baseball traditionalists who viewed Washington as an unqualified interloper, Mike Marshall decisively picked off Washington in front of a huge NBC television audience. Curt Gowdy and Vin Scully call the play. Washington's out effectively squelched an A's rally. (They had scored twice in the top of the ninth to make the game close.) The Dodgers won the game 3-2. Washington was cut by the A's in May 1975 and never played baseball again.

LA Dodgers on Joey Bishop Show Fun stuff: Six members of the defending World Series champions, the Los Angeles Dodgers, perform a clever musical number on the Joey Bishop Show in the spring of 1964. The tune from High Hopes stays the same but the lyrics discuss the Dodgers' 1963 NL pennant victory and World Series triumph. The musical Dodgers are Moose Skowron, Willie Davis, Tommy Davis, Ron Perranoski, Frank Howard and the tuxedo-clad Don Drysale.

Bowling Stars - Billy Welu vs. Johnny King (Part 2 of 2) "Bowling Stars" was a filmed, syndicated TV series that aired in the 1950s pitting two top professional bowlers in a three-game match, with the winner decided by total pinfall. The final frames of the second match and the entirety of the third match were shown. This week's episode shows reigning champion Billy Welu against Johnny King. "Whispering" Joe Wilson, who was the original play-by-play voice on the early "Championship Bowling" episodes, calls the action. Originally telecast in 1957 from Faetz-Niesen Recreation Center* in Chicago. *More recently known as Ridge Bowl.

Joe Theismann Injury - 1985 Definitely not for the faint of heart: Washington Redskins' quarterback Joe Theismann's famous career-ending leg injury. It occurred during a Monday Night Football telecast on November 18, 1985 when a trick play went awry and two New York Giants (Harry Carson and Lawrence Taylor) tackled him in the backfield. Described medically as a "comminuted compound fracture," the play was voted by ESPN viewers as the most memorable injury of all time. (By the way, "comminuted" means "pulverized"--which is a fairly accurate description of the horrible injury.) Theismann, age 36, never played another down in the NFL. His right leg never healed quite properly; it's slightly shorter than his left leg. Frank Gifford, O.J. Simpson and Fran Tarkenton were in the ABC broadcast booth that night.
