Captain Pugwash captain pugwash first screened on british TV in 1957. He was the master of the Black Pig, is a rotund and somewhat less than fearsome pirate, who nevertheless engages in the usual piratical activies involving lost treasures and so forth. His arch enemy is Cut-Throat Jake, captain of The Flying Dustbin. Despite his blustering optimism and self-importance, Pugwash is usually unobtrusively saved from catastrophe by Tom the Cabin Boy.

Bright Road Old movie poster from the movie "Bright Road," which only has one white actor, Robert Horton, in the cast. Not important now except in the context of the era. Jane Richards (Dorothy Dandridge) is a young 4th-grade teacher in the South that has a problem in her classroom with 11-year-old C.T.Young (Philip Herburn), a backward boy whose pride has made him a stubborn rebel and an exalted liar.

Sally Field at Whisky a Go Go check out this pic of a teenaged Sally Field in 1966 at Whisky a-Go-Go . . . The Whisky played an important role in many musical careers, especially for bands based in Southern California. The Byrds, Alice Cooper, Buffalo Springfield and Love were regulars, and The Doors were the house band for a while . . .

Little Rascals This clip is odd for a couple of reasons: It's been colorized and the dialogue is in German! However, the important part--Alfalfa singing Let Me Call You Sweetheart--is in English. This is from the episode Hearts Are Thumps (1937) in which Alfalfa's buddies, angry that he has betrayed the principles of the He-Man Woman-Haters Club, sabotage his lunch with soap.

Gettysburg Address On November 19, 1863, the National Military Cemetery in Gettyburg, Pennsylvania was officially dedicated. The Battle of Gettysburg lasted three days, from July 1 to 3, 1863. Some 150,000 men engaged in the Civil War's most important engagement--and some 50,000 of them became casualties. Edward Everett, a famed orator, was the keynote speaker at the dedication ceremony five months later. He spoke for two hours. President Abraham Lincoln was invited--almost as an afterthought--to make a few appropriate remarks. He followed Everett and spoke for just two minutes. Lincoln's brief speech remains the most stirring in American history.

Citizen Kane Final Scene Always ranked among the greatest Hollywood movies ever made is Orson Welles' masterpiece Citizen Kane (1941). In the movie's final scene we learn what Charles Foster Kane's last word ('Rosebud') referred to. This clip has a bit of Italian dialogue dubbed into it. Pay no attention to it; it is unimportant.

Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell AINT NO MOUNTAIN HIGH ENOUGH IN 1967, this original version of "Ain't No Mountain", was a care-free, danceable, and romantic love song that became the signature duet between Gaye and Terrell. Its success led to a string of more duets including 'You're All I Need to Get By' and 'Your Precious Love'. Even though Diana Ross recorded it again three years later, the Gaye/Terrell version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999, and is regarded today as one of the most important records ever released by Motown.
