Tom Servo is a red puppet that has a gumball machine (Carousel Executive Snack Dispenser) for a head, a body composed of a toy "Money Lover Barrel" coin bank and a toy car engine block, and a bowl-shaped hovercraft skirt (a Halloween 'Boo Bowl') instead of legs. Because of this, he must be carried into the theater by Joel or Mike, as there is a grate near the door that he can't hover over. His arms are a pair of small white ventriloquist's dummy hands on the ends of springs that are not really functional as arms, a point that is commented on occasionally throughout the series. Some episodes feature Tom with objects already in his hands, raising the unanswered question of how they got there; possibly Servo's arms are only functional on a sporadic basis. His shoulders are made from the front of an Eveready Floating Lantern. Because Servo's head is transparent, chromakeyed images appear projected through it, and thus a second puppet was built for use in the theater segments, entirely spray-painted black.

Often cited as one of the great comedies of its time, the film version won critical acclaim and became the biggest US box office hit in the summer of 1955. It contains one of the most iconic images of the 20th Century in which Marilyn Monroe's dress is blown up above her waist by a passing train underneath a subway grate she is standing on. A famous quote, "Isn't it delicious?" has originated from this scene and was even posed as a question on the game show WHO WANTS TO BE A MILLIONAIRE? and a bit more TRIVIA ~ both Jimmy Stewart and Walter Matthau were considered for the part of the middle-aged husband, tempted by his sexy, blonde neighbor . . . . . .

One of the most famous and powerful images of the Second World War: Joe Rosenthal's dramatic photo of the Marines raising the American flag atop Mount Suribachi during the horrendously bloody Battle of Iwo Jima on February 23, 1945. (Actually only five of the six are Marines; one is a Navy corpsman.) Three of the men pictured here were killed in action before the terrible battle finally ended more than a month later.

As the 1930s came to a close, Kodak came out with Kodachrome film - the first commercially viable color film available to the general public. In 1937 and 1938, the colors were still not stable and accurate, but by 1939 Kodachrome was producing color images of remarkable precision.
Not just anybody could buy this film. It cost $5 per roll and had to be sent back to Rochester , New York for development. By comparison, in 1938 Congress established the first minimum wage at 25 cents per hour. $5 represented half a week's work. But the Farm Security Administration sent out about a dozen photographers with this new film.
