Lugosi, the youngest of four children, was born Béla Ferenc Dezső Blaskó' in Lugos, Hungary on October 20, 1882. On arrival in America, the 6-feet-1 inch, 180 lb. Lugosi worked for some time as a laborer, then returned to the theater within the Hungarian-American community. He was approached to star in a play adapted by Hamilton Deane and John L. Balderston from Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. The Horace Liveright production was successful. Despite his excellent notices in the title role, and appearances in some American silent films, Lugosi had to campaign vigorously for the chance to repeat his stage success in Tod Browning's movie version of Dracula (1931), produced by Universal Pictures.

from a 1981 Stanley Cup match comes the titles n' classic theme tune for CBC's HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA. Generations of hockey fans were instantly invigorated by the opening notes of the theme, up until CBC opted not to pay the requested royalties and go for an entirely new piece of music. Rival network CTV subsequently snapped up the rights to the original theme.

Here's a group of obviously disgruntled women. Between 1830 and 1840, most temperance organizations began to argue that the only way to prevent drunkenness was to eliminate the consumption of alcohol. The Temperance Society became the Abstinence Society. The Independent Order of Good Templars, the Sons of Temperance, the Templars of Honor and Temperance, the Anti-Saloon League, the National Prohibition Party and other groups were formed and grew rapidly. With the passage of time, "The temperance societies became more and more extreme in the measures they championed.
"He who does not love wine, wife, and song will be a fool his whole life long" — a vigorous 1873 assertion of cultural values of German-American immigrantsWhile it began by advocating the temperate or moderate use of alcohol, the movement now insisted that no one should be permitted to drink any alcohol in any quantity. It did so with religious fervor and increasing convictions.

This is one from my childhood days! In Canada there was a terrific kids' show in the early 1970s called The Hilarious House of Frightenstein that was an after-school staple. Locally produced by CHCH-TV in Hamilton, Ontario, it starred the versatile Billy Van in numerous roles. In this educational bit, Van plays Dr. Pet Vet, the kindly veterinarian who always brought a potential pet to Igor. As always, the mean Sloth wouldn't allow Igor to have any pet!

Earlier I posted a clip of famed Cuban amateur boxer Teofilo Stevenson flattening an overmatched Brazilian opponent at the 1975 Pan-American Games. Here is a British documentary that highlights Stevenson's fabulous Olympic career.

Along with Lili Marlene, We'll Meet Again, sung by Vera Lynn in the 1940's, were the most popular song(s) of the Allied soldiers during WWII. (My father was constantly singing it for 40 years after the war ended). Here is the song reprised by 29 year old Welsh mezzo-soprano, Katherine Jenkins. (She does not look very much like an opera singer). She has embraced the causes of English veterans of WWII to those presently serving in the Middle East. She performs concerts all over the U.K. for the vets and troops on active duty, along with maintaining the rigorous schedule of an opera singer. She radiates the very essence of the English girl. You will probably know the tune and join in, singing with the crowd at this Cardiff concert. The song is at once, melodic, uplifting, and nostalgic.

In March of 1969, Judy married her fifth husband, Mickey Devinko, better known as Mickey Deans. They lived together in England in a tiny mews house in Chelsea. During the evening of Saturday, June 21 1969, Judy and Mickey were watching television when they had an argument. Judy ran out the door into the street, screaming and waking the neighbors. A phone call for Judy woke Mickey at 10:40 the next morning; Judy was not sleeping in the bed. Mickey searched for her, only to find the bathroom door locked. After no response, he climbed outside to the bathroom window and entered to find Judy, sitting on the toilet. Rigor mortis had already set in. Judy Garland was dead at the age of 47.
The official cause of death, according to the death certificate shown here, was accidental barbituate poisoning (quinalbarbitone).
The day Judy died, legend has it, there was a tornado in Kansas.

Australia's Annette Kellermann had weak legs as a child, so her doctor prescribed a rigorous regimen of swimming exercises to strengthen them. The advice worked wonders. By age 13 in 1900, she was a local swimming champion, having mastered numerous strokes. Kellermann found the pantaloon-type female bathing suits of the era ridiculously restrictive, however, so she designed her own form-fitting one-piece swimsuits (as pictured here). They were both revolutionary and scandalous. In 1908 a Harvard doctor declared Kellerman to be "the perfect woman". Her fame opened up many doors to her. The shapely Kellermann became a silent movie star; in 1916's A Daughter of the Gods she became the first actress in American movie history to do a nude scene. (Her long hair covered most of her body, however.) She also continued advocating the healthful benefits of swimming in books and magazines. She even penned children's books. Kellermann is also credited with being a pioneer in the field of synchronized swimming. She died in 1975 at the age of 88.
