The Howdy Doody Show was one of the first and easily the most popular children's television show in the 1950s and a reflection of the wonder, technical fascination, and business realities associated with early television. While Howdy and his friends entertained American children, they also sold television sets to American parents and demonstrated the potential of the new medium to advertisers.

On September 24, 1960, during the final showing of Howdy Doody, Clarabell, the clown who never uttered a word in all the years we had watched him, finally spoke to us, "Goodbye Kids".
Children everywhere were elated and heartbroken at the same time. We miss Clarabell, but we especially miss the man behind the face of the clown, the man with the biggest heart of all, Bob Keeshan.

Buffalo Bob Smith of Howdy Doody fame bamboozles the panel when he appears as a mystery challenger on the syndicated version of What's My Line circa 1971. (He and Howdy Doody had teamed up to be mystery guests on the CBS version of What's My Line in the 1950s.)
