Howard Cosell Final Boxing Broadcast Here are the final two rounds of Larry Holmes' one-sided heavyweight title defense against Randall (Tex) Cobb in Houston in 1982. The fight was notorious for Howard Cosell's negative, anti-boxing commentary. Cosell never worked another bout.

Salvador Sanchez Tribute One of the most respected and talented boxers of the early 1980s was Mexico's world featherweight champion Salvador Sanchez. Sanchez was killed in an automobile accident in the summer of 1982 at age 23. Here's a tribute, narrated by Howard Cosell, that aired on ABC's Wide World of Sports shortly after Sanchez's death.

Howard Cosell SI Cover Renowned broadcaster Howard Cosell graced the cover of this August 8, 1983 issue of Sports Illustrated. Cosell was already a bit of a has-been by then. Cosell had sworn off pro boxing in 1982. By the end of 1983 he would leave ABC's Monday Night Football broadcasting team too. The 1984 Summer Olympics would be Cosell's broadcasting swansong. He left a legacy of excellence and honesty. You either loved Cosell or hated him. He was regularly voted the most popular sports broadcaster in America--and he was regularly voted the most hated sports broadcaster in America.

The Conqueror- Takes Many Lives Including John Wayne The Conqueror is a 1956 epic film produced by Howard Hughes and starring John Wayne as the Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan. The Conqueror on location in Utah in 1955, Of the 220 actors, 91 had contracted cancer as of the early 1980s and 46 died of it, including stars John Wayne, Susan Hayward, and Agnes Moorehead, and director Dick Powell. Experts say under ordinary circumstances only 30 people out of a group of that size should have gotten cancer. The cause? No one can say for sure, but many attribute the cancers to radioactive fallout from U.S. atom bomb tests in nearby Nevada. Many people involved in the production knew about the radiation (there's a picture of Wayne himself operating a Geiger counter during the filming), but no one took the threat seriously at the time. Howard Hughes was said to have felt "guilty as hell" about the whole affair, although as far as I can tell it never occurred to anyone to sue him. For various reasons he withdrew The Conqueror from circulation, and for years thereafter the only person who saw it was Hughes himself, who screened it night after night during his paranoid last years.

Discovered by an agent, as her mother pushed her stroller in Los Angeles, Erin got her first job, playing a boy in a commercial for Folgers Coffee, at eleven months. Her next job was a detergent commercial with future President Ronald Reagan. Right before her second birthday, ABC came calling, and Erin was cast as little witch Tabitha Stephens on the top ten sitcom, Bewitched. Millions of fans around the world tuned in to see if Tabitha had inherited magical powers from her mother Samantha. After eight seasons, 23 Emmy nominations, and 254 episodes, Bewitched gracefully ended without cancellation. Despite the fact that Bewitched was filmed in the 60ís and 70ís, the popularity of the show endures. Howard Cosell Muhammad Ali Montage Here's a montage of video moments featuring the unique interaction between Howard Cosell and Muhammad Ali. (It was done in 1992 to celebrate Ali's 50th birthday, but the clips span several decades; I listed it in the 1970s because that's when I best remember watching Cosell interview Ali.) The ending is surprisingly touching.

Corpse of King Tut On November 4, 2007, the remains of Egypt's King Tut were exposed to the public for the first time. To ensure its preservation, archaeologists decided to remove the corpse from its stone sarcophagus and move it to a climate-controlled crypt in the Valley of the Kings. The transfer occurred exactly 85 years to the day that Tut's tomb was discovered by Howard Carter in 1922.
