The Great Dictator Dance with the Globe Since Lava has shared his clips of the great Chaplin, I'd like to add one more. First released in October of 1940, The Great Dictator bitterly satirized Nazism and Adolf Hitler, which culminated in an overt political plea to defy fascism. Well before the full extent of the horrors of Nazism had been uncovered, Chaplin's film advanced a stirring, controversial condemnation of Hitler, fascism, and the Nazis, the latter of whom he excoriated in the film as "machine men, with machine minds and machine hearts." This film was Chaplin's first talkie, and his most commercially successful film. Lava, I know you're going to enjoy this!

All Quiet on the Western Front Final Scene One of the few movies that was better than the novel upon which it was based: All Quiet On The Western Front (1930). It's the story of a German youth, Paul Baumer, who patriotically volunteers for service in the First World War with his classmates. His enthusiasm quickly fades to cycicism as the horrors and brutality of modern warfare become apparent. This famous final scene (which does not appear in the novel) shows Baumer being shot by a French sniper while he reaches for a butterfly.

British First World War Executions During the First World War, the British army executed more than 300 of its own soldiers who were convicted of cowardice. Many of these troops had suffered mental breakdowns because of the horrors of trench warfare. A movement is now afoot to have them posthumously pardoned.

Poltergeist Theme This film had a lot of bad luck and theories abounded. Great music though by Jerry Goldsmith and one of my favourite horrors. I like how this theme lulls you into a false sense of security.

Blackadder Goes Forth - Final Scene In a way this is the British equivalent of the final episode of MASH. MASH ended happily with the characters returning stateside. Blackadder Goes Forth didn't end so happily. The irreverent mini-sitcom comprised of just six episodes was set amid the chaos and horrors of the First World War's trenches. Rowan Atkinson played company leader Captain Blackadder. This poignant final scene fom 1989, often called the most memorable in British television, has the cast regulars preparing themselves to go 'over the top' to face certain death.

THE FORGOTTEN VICTIMS OF WWII The Greatest Mass Rape in History One of this century's greatest crimes, and probably one of the greatest crimes against women in history, was the mass rape of the conquered women of Europe in 1945. The rapists were mainly Red Army soldiers, some of them non-White troops from the Far East and Central Asian Republics of the Soviet Union. As the Red Army advanced toward her in 1945, the city of Berlin had become a city virtually without men. Out of a civilian population of 2,700,000, 2,000,000 were women. Former Soviet war correspondent Natalya Gesse recalled: "The Russian soldiers were raping every German female from eight to 80... It was an army of rapists." The rape victims were not just Germans. Polish women also suffered. So did young Russian, Belorussian and Ukrainian women who had been sent back to Germany by the Wehrmacht for slave labor. As Author Antony Beevor put it, "If anything, the events of 1945 reveal how thin the veneer of civilization can be when there is little fear of retribution." The Shining 1980 TV trailer Unfortunately thick with broadcast static as it was recorded via antenna in 1980, but the still-eerie television trailer for director Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of the Stephen King novel "The Shining". Jack Nicholson, Shelley Duvall, Danny Lloyd and Scatman Crothers star in the terrifying tale of a family subject to the horrors of a haunted resort hotel sealed off from the rest of the world by the winter snow.

WWII: Massacre at Oradour-Sur-Glane On June 10, 1944, four days after the Allied D-Day landings in Normandy, German SS troops descended on a small, peaceful French village, Oradour-Sur-Glane, in which about 700 people lived. In a matter of a few hours, Oradour-Sur-Glane ceased to exist. Virtually every person who lived there was indiscriminately shot or burned alive. Every building was also destroyed. After the war, the French government decided to leave Oradour-Sur-Glane's ruins as they stood as a solemn reminder of the horrors of war.
