SOPHIA LOREN Still a Sex Symbol at 72 Born Sofia Villani Scicolone, in Rome Italy on September 20, 1934. An illegitimate child from a poor home in Naples, she became a teenage beauty queen and model. Her film debut was as an extra. She came under contract to film producer Carlo Ponti, later her husband, and blossomed as an actress. An international career followed and she won an Oscar for La Ciociara, (1961, translation Two Women). Frequently appearing with Marcello Mastroianni, her many films include The Millionairess (1961) and Marriage Italian Style (1964). In 1979 she published Sophia Loren: Living and Loving (with A E Hotchner) which was filmed for television as Sophia Loren: Her Own Story (1980), in which she played herself and her mother. She received an honorary Academy Award in 1991. How she stays so gorgeous is anyone's guess, but being Sicilian myself, I would be willing to bet there's something in the olive oil, no kidding. In any case, I better get me a few barrels of it lol

I Remember Simon Weisenthal Even though most of you may not know who this man was, there are many who do, and who will always think of him with a great deal of honor and respect, I am one of them. Simon Wiesenthal, was a Holocaust survivor who helped track down numerous Nazi war criminals following World War II and spent the later decades of his life fighting anti-Semitism and prejudice against all people. He died on Sept. 20, 2005 at the age of 96. The contribution of this man to history is best described as keeping the memory of the Holocaust alive during the crucial years. In the 1950s, the US was busy with the Cold War, while Israel had its own troubles with the Arabs. He just took the job. It was a job no one else wanted. He was the only full-time Nazi hunter. A day after World War II ended, Wiesenthal handed over a crumbling list of Nazis to US Army intelligence. He did not want to be a Nazi hunter, he was an architect by profession. However, the Holocaust forced him into action; 89 members of his family were murdered by the Nazis. He couldn't forget, he believed someone had to go after the criminals. In the last couple of years his health deteriorated, but his mind remained clear. Aside from Adolph Eichmann, among the 1,100 Nazi war criminals Wiesenthal helped bring to justice, were the commanders of Treblinka and Sobibor, and also the Nazi who arrested Anne Frank, Karl Silberbauer. More than anyone else in the world, he represented the belief that anti-Semitism and crimes against humanity are not mitigated with passing time, nor are they ever forgiven. "May he rest in eternal peace knowing he did what was right."

I Remember Elie Weisel Dedicated to another famous Holocaust survivor, Nazi hunter and Nobel Peace Prize winner. Elie Wiesel was born at Sighet, Maramures county, Romania On September 30, 1928. He is the author of over 40 books, the best known of which is Night, a memoir that describes his experiences during the Holocaust and his imprisonment in several concentration camps. Wiesel was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1986. The Norwegian Nobel Committee called him a "messenger to mankind," noting that through his struggle to come to terms with "his own personal experience of total humiliation and of the utter contempt for humanity shown in Hitler's death camps," as well as his "practical work in the cause of peace," Wiesel has delivered a powerful message "of peace, atonement and human dignity" to humanity. On November 30, 2006 Wiesel received an honorary knighthood in London, England in recognition of his work toward raising Holocaust education in the United Kingdom. Music "Hatikvah", (Israeli National Anthem) performed by Barbra Streisand. I'm thankful to be able to share this with you.

60s Ad For Royal Crown Cola With Teen Idols Dino Desi and Billy Here's the story behind that group now known as Ricci, Desi and Billy. Ricci Martin, Desi Arnaz Jr. and Billy Hinsche were old friends, who grew up together in Beverly Hills, California. Their common bond was the music they made. Ricci, Desi & Billy is their newly formed musical group featuring original material as well as the songs of 60's musical teen sensations Dino, Desi & Billy (Desi & Billy's former group). Though this is a new configuration of the original band, the last names remain the same - Martin, Arnaz and Hinsche. The idea for this group came at a benefit for the late Carl Wilson of the Beach Boys, which was held at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles. Desi and Billy performed a song which Desi had written called "My Old friend" in honor of their friend and partner Dean Paul Martin (Dino) who died in a plane crash while flying for the California National Guard in 1987. Ricci performed his hit single, "Stop, Look Around" from his critically acclaimed album "Beached", co-produced by Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche. There was such a powerful, magical feeling that night, that Ricci, Desi and Billy decided to form a trio.

Gary US Bonds Quarter to Three This clip may have been from Bandstand, the year was 1961 and the music was wild! We were dong the "Mashed Potato", the "Pony", and the "Twist", and we were having a ball! Gary joined record producer Frank Guida's small Legrand record label and Guida changed his name to U.S. Bonds in hope that it would be confused with a public service announcement advertising the sale of government bonds and in that way get more airplay. Bonds' first hit was the song "New Orleans", which was followed by "Not Me", a flop for Bonds, but later a hit for The Orlons, and then by his only Number One hit, "Quarter To Three" in June 1961. Subsequent hits, under the name Gary U.S. Bonds, included "School Is Out", "Dear Lady Twist" and "Twist, Twist, Senora" in the early 1960s. In a 1963 tour of Europe, he headlined above The Beatles. While Gary U.S. Bonds is mostly known for achievements within rhythm and blues and rock and roll, he often transcends these genres, he has been nominated for the Country Music Association's "Songwriter of the Year distinction. He is also an honoree of the Rhythm & Blues Foundation. He was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame on 15 October 2006, and still performs onstage. "Quarter To Three" appears on The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame's 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll list.

Remembering Mary Martin Although she did a few films early in her career, Mary Martin was generally passed over for the filmed version of the musical plays in which she starred. She once explained that she didn't enjoy making films, because she did not have the "connection" with an audience that she had in live performances. The closest she ever came to preserving her stage performances were her famous television appearances as Peter Pan (she had starred in a musical version on Broadway in 1954, and this production was subsequently performed on television in 1955, 1956 and 1960). While she didn't enjoy making theatrical films, she did apparently enjoy appearing on television, as she did frequently. She died, aged 76, from colorectal cancer in California on November 3, 1990. Here's a clip of Larry Hagman giving a wonderful speech in honor of, and to, his mother, during the Kennedy Center Honors in 1989.

Neil Sedaka Another Brooklyn Boy Who Made it Big Neil first demonstrated musical aptitude in his second-grade choral class, and when his teacher sent a note home suggesting he take piano lessons, his mother got a job in a department store for six months to pay for a second-hand upright. He took to the instrument immediately. In 1947, he auditioned successfully for a piano scholarship to the prestigious Juilliard School of Music's Preparatory Division for Children. The best-known Billboard Hot 100 hits of his early career were "Oh! Carol", "Calendar Girl", "You Mean Everything to Me", "Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen", and "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do". "Oh! Carol" referred to Neil's former girlfriend Carole King. In 2007, Sedaka continues to perform regularly. He has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame in October 2006. Last month, a special concert was presented at the Lincoln Center in New York City, to honor the 50th anniversary of Sedaka's debut in show business. In this clip Neil does a medley of his hits Stairway to Heaven, Hey Little Devil, Happy Birthday Sweet Sixteen and Calendar Girl.
