RIN TIN TIN Opening From 1954 to 1959, the Rin Tin Tin show casted one of television's earliest canine heroes, who left big paw prints for his descendants to follow. Rin Tin Tin was the only dog in Los Angeles to be listed in the telephone directory. Lee Duncan, his owner and trainer, said, "Rinty was very close to his great grandfather," the original Rin Tin Tin, who appeared in many popular motion pictures of the 30's and 40's, and was, for a time, the highest paid performer (actor?) in films.

Hogans Heroes pilot intro Only one episode of Hogan's Heroes was ever shot in black-and-white: the pilot episode. Here is the introduction. You'll note a few changes from the later introductions. The pilot episode had a Russian character in it and Sergeant Carter was absent. Once the series began in earnest, the Russian character was ditched and replaced by Larry Hovis' Sgt. Carter. (Hovis had appeared in the pilot episode as a guest character.) This move actually better reflected reality. Russians captured by the Germans were not treated nearly as well as those from other Allied countries. There would have been no Russians in a Luftstalag.

Hogans Heroes Jello commerical The cast of Hogan's Heroes promotes Jello and Dream Whip. (German prison camps in World War II were famous for their desserts. Any history book will confirm that.)

Alfred Mosher Butts Inventor of Scrabble One of my heroes! In 1948 Alfred Mosher Butts, an unemployed architect, invented the greatest word game in the history of the world: Scrabble Brand Crossword Game. He named it Criss-Cross Words and didn't make much money from it. He sold the rights to a family called the Brunots who renamed the game Scrabble and marketed it from their home. It got plenty of rave reviews in the early 1950s. Demand for Scrabble became so great that the Brunots could not keep pace with the orders. They in turn sold the rights to Scrabble to a manufacturer. Over the years Scrabble's ownership has passed through several companies. Hasbro presently owns the North American trademark name of Scrabble. Each year millions of games are sold and hundreds of tournaments are held under the aegis of the National Scrabble Association. (Yours truly is an expert ranked player who directs an official NSA club in Canada. I can often be spotted officiating major Scrabble events. Look for me at the 2008 U.S. Nationals in Orlando in July!)

Greta Garbo and John Gilbert Greta Garbo and John Gilbert, the queen and king of silent romantic movies, in "Flesh and Devil," 1927. She reigned in the talkies as well, but he became one of the casualties of sound, not so much because his voice was thin, but because talking-picture audiences no longer wanted romantic heroes, preferring tough guys. . .

New York City Bike Messengers I only put this up for people that went to NYC to jar their memory. When they crossed the street, they stopped to let by, what they thought was some nut ready to hit them. 1st way to spot a tourist, and afterwards they probally saw something they thought wasn't possible on a bike!Because you threw their timing off. When in fact they have your walking pace timed for an opening between your legs if they could fit!My heroes! In my early 20's I road raced hoping for a career, found out I was average. In my late 20's I lived across the river in Bayonne took my bike over on the commuter ferry for a job interview for messenger. So before I went I fueled up (too much) to "show em' my stuff!" Never made it;Good thing because you need total focus and concentration.Besides playing & listining to music and riding like this. Nothing has given me this rush of adrenaline and dopamine.A silver medal in the olympics was won by a messenger, they mainly use track bikes with no brakes, hold on to cabs, cabbies don't mind. For that slingshot effect. And when I found out in the 80's they could make as much as $800.00 a wk. I hopped on the ferry.

Gettysburg 75th Anniversary 1938 A handful of surviving Civil War veterans from both the North and the South reunited in Gettysburg in 1938 to mark the 75th anniversary of that titanic battle. Here are some films of the goings-on. They are all heroes in my estimation.
